domain names cost too much, literally the fakest economy in existence. Yhey just need to cover the funding of ICANN and the IETF which should be no more than 50 furrys (network engineers) and 10 old guys on a board (they work for free they like it).
"The #ICANN Grant Program is an exciting opportunity for eligible organizations across the globe to apply for funding for projects that are consistent with ICANN's mission"
"Advancing developments, innovation, and open standards for the benefit of the Internet community."
"The total net auction proceeds fund amounts to $217 million as of 30 June 2023"
"The total amount available for grants in this first cycle is $10 million."
Listening to the #DNSSEC and Security Workshop at #ICANN79 - Kim Davies is currently giving an update about plans to rollover the #KSK (Key Signing Key) for DNSSEC.
Interesting to read about the dilemma of the hardware security module (HSM) vendor ceasing to make the HSMs that #ICANN was using...
“So, it is our intention to inform #ICANN early in 2023 that the UK wishes to retire .gb. We expect this to be a straightforward administrative procedure.”
Well .gb is still here 🤔
(Fun fact : .中国 is given as the #ccTLD of China. It is not widely used but gives an example of #IDN)
Very good news: #ICANN is going to define a new special #TLD "internal" meant for use in internal networks only. This TLD is meant to never be used in the broader #Internet. 👍
I hope #router vendors will now react so that those hacky config #domains like "fritz.box" will be replaced with something that ends with ".internal". Those hacky domains always left a bad taste in my mouth.
It's not 100% official yet but the chances look good.
Interesting proposal for a top-level domain (TLD) that you could use internally on your LAN that will never be available out on the public Internet. So you could give your servers names ending in “.internal” and those addresses would not conflict with public addresses.
For the last decade or so it's been an open secret in network operator circles that #ICANN has been captured by greedy people who put ego and profit over stability.
Letting .dev be registered by Google was arguably stupid. Yes it's a snappy name and people clearly desire it, but it was also clear that there was plenty of internal use which would break.
I consider this to be a piece that is very naive; it is not journalism, it is an echo of fables that surround #ICANN
Indeed a strong counter argument can be made that ICANN has become a retrograde force against innovation, much like the telcos were in the '60s as they tried to resist the idea of store-and-forward packet-switching technologies that underly the internet.
(There is no doubt that ICANN has become a retrograde force that has imposed business structures that cost internet users over a $billion each year in gift fees to companies such as Verisign.)
I remain convinced that the internet is fracturing, that the end-to-end principle of packet switching has been replaced by a softer end-to-end principle based on connectivity of a few favored applications.
ICANN78: Missbrauchsklausel für Domains in ICANN-Verträgen
Die Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will etwas gegen Domainmissbrauch tun und möglicher staatlicher Regulierung zuvorkommen.
