Happiness is discovering that the Brier semi-final is streaming live on YouTube!!

@esg Is that new this year? I thought in past years I had to go through other ways to see them from here in the US.

And yes, I’m watching the final now!!

Waking up to a reminder that even though we have had warm days recently, this IS March in northern #Vermont ! 😃

(And it’s forecast to warm up and change to rain, so this will probably all be gone by the afternoon..)

Just learned of someone planning their wedding for during the total solar eclipse on April 8th! (Not here in Vermont but somewhere else in the path.)

If you want to go for once-in-a-lifetime moments, that certainly is one of them! 🎉

@hardaker HA! There IS that!

About 10” (25cm) has fallen in the last 12 hours and it’s still falling. Wet and heavy. Supposed to get to well above freezing by the afternoon.

@rickscully Wow! We have only had an inch or two over in Chittenden County.

@sjthomas @rickscully Beautiful photo! That’s so cool that you have alpacas!

danyork,

@sjthomas @rickscully Soooooo tempting! 🤔 But we’re not quite set up for something like that where we live in a suburb in Shelburne. 🤣 Would need fencing… a small barn… all that kind of stuff!

Ah, the joys of modern computing...

my iMac is making noises that sound like notifications from some social network ... and it may be somewhere in the 178 tabs I currently have open in Firefox... or maybe it's in the dozen tabs I have open in Safari... or the 20-ish in Chrome...

... or maybe it's in the 22+ apps that I have open in MacOS. 🤔

Thankfully it's not (yet) too annoying...

Listening to the and Security Workshop at - Kim Davies is currently giving an update about plans to rollover the (Key Signing Key) for DNSSEC.

Interesting to read about the dilemma of the hardware security module (HSM) vendor ceasing to make the HSMs that was using...

(More about HSMs in general: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_security_module )

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

A key point is that ICANN is now looking to get to a cadence of rolling the KSK every three years. More info on this slide...

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

There was also an update about plans for an algorithm rollover for the KSK. ICANN had a comment period and is working on a revised report.

The key point is that there will NOT be a change in the algorithm this year. They are looking at 2029 as the timeframe for a change.

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@jpmens My understanding is that it is because the Keyper HSM’s are going away and will not be supported after 2027. So at some point Verisign needs to move to new HSMs.

Watching CNN's team analyze results... they show these numbers of tiny amounts of votes. But of course these are from small towns that are able to quickly tabulate all their votes and report their results.

The bigger towns and cities take a while to count all their votes, so they will be a while before they get reported.

"a more quirky state" ... John King says about on CNN during the coverage. 🤣

(And yes, we kind of like how weird and "quirky" Vermont may be!)

Spending much of my day as a volunteer election worker helping at the polls. Today is both the Vermont Presidential Primary (part of “Super Tuesday”) and also “Town Meeting Day ” where we vote on our town budget, school budget, and yes, for a new fire engine 🚒 and a new ambulance 🚑 🙂 . My particular role is a fairly easy one.. I stand near the tabulator machine in case there are issues with it.. and I give out stickers! 😃

Very constant flow of people voting today! Quite impressed to see so many people there.

A part of it may be people wanting to vote in the Presidential Primary … but I suspect more of it may be people wanting the school budget to go down in 🔥🔥🔥 !

(Through a combination of factors, including a massive change in the way the state of Vermont funds school districts, we are potentially looking at a greater than 20% increase in our property taxes! People are NOT happy! 🙁)

On my way to #TownMeeting discussion tonight, because this is what we do in #Vermont. 🙂

Plus, there is lasagna catered by a local restaurant 😋🤣

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@dbelson Our town meeting these years is different from the past. We gather tonight to have discussion about all the items we will be voting on tomorrow.

And that’s the key - all the voting happens on ballots tomorrow that are available from 7:00am to 7:00pm. So it’s not as exclusionary as past town meetings have been.

Tonight we also had a volunteer service award, poem readings, Boy Scouts presenting flags, the national anthem … and oh, yes, … lasagna! 🤣

200+ people here.

I have a article coming out tomorrow that I'm really not going to enjoy publishing. I think a lot of people are going to hate it, get nasty about it, and probably make the usual boring claims of how I'm spouting bullshit.

I feel as though part of Mastodon's user culture has enabled harassment, doxxing, death threats, and a litany of other horrible shit. What's particularly disgusting, though, is that a lot of these people will whine about privacy and consent before switching to some absolutely dehumanizing tactics that uphold neither principle.

It's not the progressive welcoming circle of friendship that it looks like. It's kind of a fucking vanity cult, actually.

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@deadsuperhero Good piece you wrote. Very sad that the incident chased away a developer who was in fact trying to expand Fediverse integration.

We seem to collectively have this “rush to outrage” when so often we need to step back and take a deep breath.

Many years ago someone said to me “never presume malice when stupidity is a far better explanation” .. and here instead of “stupidity” we could just say “lack of information”. 🙁

Thanks for writing that article.

Why does the loss of ice in Antarctica affect Northern Europe more than melt in Greenland? I wrote a brief post to try and explain it.

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@Ruth_Mottram Oh, wow! Very cool that you get to go to Greenland! I was only there that once back in 1990. I, too, would love to go to Antarctica some day.

And yes, the job of some of the support crew was definitely interesting - northern summers at research camps in Greenland... northern winters at research stations in Antarctica. For a 20-something, the idea was compelling! Alas, I had a job to come back to when my six weeks in Greenland was done, so I couldn't explore that life!
