@penguingeek I can’t trigger such a bug, but there are many opinions that Linux desktop apps should come from containers in the future. So I think software makers should start making sure that their apps work properly in Flatpak, Snap and even AppImage where appropriate.

Are you happy with laptops that have one battery nowadays or would you prefer to "go back" to having one internal and one hot swappable?

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@combo I have a ThinkPad T480 which has internal one like every modern laptop + it has one that looks like it's internal, but it can separate from the laptop with a single click. The internal one then functions as UPS while you are swapping the 2nd one.

So when you pull-out the one on the picture laptop still works.

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@RemeJuan ARM Macs have good battery life, they don’t need an option to swap them out :)

@RemeJuan ah, speaking of phones … mine is at 119 after 7 months. I limited it to 80% of charge.

If all were offered as free OR paid on Steam, how would you prefer them? Would you prefer to play all games for free or would you prefer to pay for them to have them delivered to you via Steam? Note: Free ones are installed solo. No launcher, no achievements, no cloud save, no friends list, no Steam year-in-review, no hours played counter, no Steam Workshop, no Steam cards, no game decorations in Steam points shop, but you don't have to pay for any game, ever.

@hellvolution the reason which triggered me to ask this question is Mindustry. It's a GPLv3 licensed game which you can download and play. But on Steam it's $10. So, basically, if you wish to support them you buy on Steam. It's clearly different than how PoE support works.

Just food for thought, I guess.

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@ChrisBoren check out the game Mindustry to see what triggered me to ask this question. It's not about piracy, but the fact that the game is released under GPL license. You can get it from Flathub in 5 seconds if you wish, or for $10 from Steam. And yes, I share your opinion on your reasons why you voted Steam.

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@ChrisBoren I mean it's software... You can apply whichever license you want. There are a ton of GPL video games out there. Literally, a ton! It's just that almost none of them are on Steam. I only know about Mindustry and Battle for Wesnoth. Both are well crafted!

Anyone who is reading this plays games on their TV in the living room? What's your setup? Do you just have hooked-up with a dock or do you use Steam Link software on your TV to stream from your gaming PC or do you have a "Steam Machine" type of a dedicated device just for TV ? I wish to hear about it.

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@berkough OK. I have all consoles, but I kinda don't use them much anymore. I am trying to see if it would make any sense to build a Steam machine for days when I want to play in the living room.

I tried Steam Link but the input lag is killing me. It's unplayable and I don't know how to fix it.

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@ampersandrew I have SteamLink on my TV but it has a big input lag. I completely forgot that I could use SteamDeck as a SteamLink client, thanks for the idea!

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@stigatle so I tried that on my 2016 Sony TV and I get a ton of input lag.

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@berkough oh, there are already multiple distros which offer SteamDeck-like experience. Software is not a barrier, but hardware. If I would build a Steam Machine I would have to acquire parts to build it and I am not sure if that makes sense next to already having my main computer gaming-capable.

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@sebulon I have similar specs in my PC ... but my PC is being used for everything (work, hobbies, gaming) except for couch gaming simply because it's physically not in that room. So making yet another gaming box would probably be a bit wasteful, but there is this itch.

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@berkough I have a 256GB model and I have a dock for it.

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@wook @berkough unfortunately I made a mistake with choosing the mid model with 256GB SSD which can barely fit two AAA games at once. But I will hook it up and see how it behaves on a 4K TV. I did that once when it was brand new and everything felt laggy, but maybe it works better now.

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@dunkelstern yep, I will try that. Good idea, thank you.

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@wook @berkough yeah, I suspect it would be better to tell SteamDeck to stick with 1080p user interface. 4K may be a waste of memory.

darth,
@darth@silversword.online avatar

@sebulon yeah latency bothers me too with SteamLink on TV.
