Everything I've made up to this point always had pixel-per-frame movement (e.g. "all-or-nothing" movement), which, while effective, doesn't really capture the "feel" of mass, momentum, etc. See my A2600 "game" below (that I made in a similar Pikuma course) and note the "all-or-nothing" movement of the jet

Gif of some "gameplay" from a simple Atari 2600 development demo. A tiny jet moves about the screen and dodges red enemy bombers above what appears to be a giant river. The jet moves in a "all-or-nothing" manner, e.g. without regard to momentum, mass, etc.

@jake4480 I always wondered how Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell ended up doing tons of covers for video game box art in the 90s. I am SO nostalgic for this particular brand of goofy/awesome fantasy artwork!

May 23rd is International Synthesizer Day - and it's also the late Bob Moog's birthday. Raise a knob 🎹

@jake4480 Omg "Return of the Rentals" is essentially Moog pop heaven

I am working through the [at] pikuma [at] mastodon.gamedev.place course on NES development and I can now make Mario float ethereally through a single screen of the Mushroom kingdom

Gif of a NES emulator showing a single screen from "Super Mario Bros", where Mario is floating about the screen in an ethereal way. To the side of the window is a hex editor, which shows various values changing in RAM as Mario moves about.

Sorry I haven't posted anything in the last few days; I need to create some more arcade-related content for the TL this weekend

Additionally, I've been working on learning NES/Famicom dev in my free time, I could also post content related to that, if there's interest

Started a new modeling project…

Those who are as old… I mean… as experienced as I am, might already recognize what this is going to be. 🙂

More updates will follow.

Happy birthday to Pete Townshend, born 79 years ago today (May 19, 1945). He is of course the guitar string smasher for the legendary Who, and is also known for how great he is at that full-arm windmilling strum thing.

@jake4480 i wonder if, when pete does his iconic knee-slide onstage, he gets invincibility frames IRL. his version of the souls-like dodge roll

Happy 23rd anniversary to Weezer's green album, released today (May 15) in 2001. Man, did I listen to this album a lot, and I still can. Might be my favorite Weezer record but I hate the last song - luckily it's last and I can just turn it off when it comes on. 😂

I remember following along online as they were making it, they were posting updates. Some great unreleased/b-side stuff from this era, too.

@jake4480 was this the first matt sharp-less weezer record? 👀

I love how the title screen music in "Golden Axe II" seamlessly transitions from "stern, high fantasy march" to "George Clinton funkiness" within the space of 30 seconds

me [for the past 30+ years]: snes music sounds so muffled, and flat, i don't really get it

me [upon clicking on the castlevania iv OST on a lark on youtube]: snes, i owe you an apology, i wasn't familiar with your game

dinosaurgerms,
@dinosaurgerms@furries.club avatar

admittedly i played the game a very long time ago, and i remember that the game isn't perfect (multi-directional whip negates need for sub-weapons, player sprite is too big, etc.) but THIS MUSIC! good god this is so good!

dinosaurgerms,
@dinosaurgerms@furries.club avatar

the "muffled-warm" sound of the snes sound actually works really well with moody stuff (!) can we have more moody, jazz-y OSTs plz

dinosaurgerms,
@dinosaurgerms@furries.club avatar

i feel like this is a perfect example of a OST that plays to the strengths of the hardware, going for an "organic" sound that you couldn't get on competing consoles at the time

dinosaurgerms,
@dinosaurgerms@furries.club avatar

ALSO! i remember the game being very "earthy" in color palette, but i didn't remember it having this much depth/beauty in its "earthy-ness". i guess the comparatively-huge snes color palette wins out here, since this would probably look really muddy on (again) competing systems

Gif form "Castlevania IV", showing the logo slowly move into frame onscreen. In the background, a worn, earth-y, stone wall is seen, with various insects crawling over it.

dinosaurgerms,
@dinosaurgerms@furries.club avatar

(and again, before someone says "but dino the game is flawed"- yes, i know, i agree that rondo is the best classic-style castlevania, i just never realized how much i personally vibe with this game's particular aesthetic + mood)

dinosaurgerms,
@dinosaurgerms@furries.club avatar

@jake4480 lol yeah i might be overdoing it in qualifying my praise, i'm just anxious about someone coming in and being all "EHRMMMM the multi-directional whip negates the DPS efficiency of the axe subweapon, making this game clearly worthless 😡😡😡"

dinosaurgerms,
@dinosaurgerms@furries.club avatar

normal brain: "wow, mode 7 on the snes!"

galaxy brain: "wow, transparent layers on the snes!"

Gif from "Castlevania IV" showing off transparent effects used for water in the game. They look really cool!

dinosaurgerms,
@dinosaurgerms@furries.club avatar

@jake4480 yeah i was really upset when i checked my switch online acct last night and realized that this is NOT on the switch online service lol

dinosaurgerms,
@dinosaurgerms@furries.club avatar

@jake4480 NO >:( i think maybe because it's on that collection. although maybe it's bc konami is just weird nowadays. contra isn't anywhere to be seen either :(
