2nd eSIM I bought for international travel doesn't work abroad because I can't dump my first (home) eSIM and my phone doesn't support having 2, even if one is disabled. Try to instead contact Mint Mobile to add int'l roaming to my plan: "Confirm ID by responding to SMS". Can't respond without roaming: Account locked for sus login. Chatbot says contact us during West Coast business hrs 🥴 No support email, at all. Try to send DM on X: account locked for sus location. Mint, why NO async option?! 😭

@ErrantCanadian @facct @philosophy Why equate large image generation models with all AI art? No care for small models like StyleGAN, where AI artists specifically are not indiscriminately including copywritten images in training? This feels like a major oversight, to give up all of AI assisted creativity to MidJourney, Stable Diffusion, and DALL-E, no?

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@ErrantCanadian Thanks for considering. I think a good catchall might be "text to image models" (even though there are still some minor edge cases there). It was really frustrating as a long time artist who spent 2020 and 2021 experimenting with training small StyleGAN models on historical maps and other CC-0 material to be insta-blocked when text-to-image came on scene in 2022 😞 I think people forget that it's not always "AI vs. artists" - many artists use generative processes in their work

101 studies flagged as bogus COVID cure pusher sees career unravel

It's a past-due reckoning for French microbiologist Didier Raoult, critics say.

Essentially, critics claim Raoult and the institute that he led until 2021, the Hospital Institute of Marseille Mediterranean Infection (IHU), conducted hundreds of studies on humans without appropriate ethical approval or oversight or adequate consent from all participants, the Science investigation found.

Helping out a mate set up her recently. She got to a page asking a question and prodded the buttons without reading. I went "Wait hang on what did that say," we never found out but it was Probably something about updating a list of ports? Who knows! Anyway it started up fine, but... like, twenty years ago I would've gone, like, "Mate what are you doing," but these days...

When every website you visit thrusts a thing in your face as you're scrolling and you know it's spam so you just hit the heck-off button without looking, never mind reading

When every game you play starts with a bunch of logo videos that you have to mash buttons to skip

When a new game throws some bollocks up about an EULA that nobody expects anyone to ever read

When every three days your computer goes "Hey can I just -" and you read it once and understand that it's asking you to install spyware and then every other time you hit the Remind Me In 3 Days button without thinking or even pausing

When every day you get an email that says "Important information about your account" and it's never important information

When 80% of your physical mail goes straight into the recycling bin without even being opened because, well, it's just recycling

...yeah. It's absolutely no surprise that our default first interaction with a machine is to mash buttons randomly until it stops banging on about whatever and gets on with doing what we bought it to do.

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@ifixcoinops The other day I was at a self checkout and some pop-up about "20% OFF" showed up and I mashed the "ok" button and it said "Waiting for attendant...". She came over and was like "oh yeah idk why it does that every time, try again" and reset the interface. The next time, I read the pop-up closely, and realized it was an ad to sign up for the store credit card. This lady had been summoned to "teach me more" about the credit card on every single transaction and neither party knew why

@chrisamaphone Yes!! I have been thinking a lot about grammars actually, both for representing data transformations in hi-d vis, and for a new project I'm working on this summer about small language models in constrained environments. I just submitted a paper with a bunch of illustrated diagrams I made to explain a specific data structure, but there must be existing ways to talk about these relations that make it accessible to a math-y audience

So much energy going into AI chatbots. I'm curious what you think. Do you find AI chatbots useful? Are they useful enough that you are willing to pay to use them? Or do you think they are over hyped and not useful to you at all?

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@louisrcouture @mike Same, I like it for "translating" a minimum working example of what I want to do: "Here is Python code that does X, Y, Z. How would I do the same in R?" helps a lot with learning. I also like CoPilot for writing docstrings; I'm always changing around parameters, so knowing that at the end I can just go through each function and re-write docstrings to match the function is super helpful / makes me adhere to better coding practices. We get CoPilot for free though as students 🤷‍♀️

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@louisrcouture @mike oh another thing that's really helpful is bash scripts for .zip files and creating a directory structure. You can input a list of files and filetypes to ignore, and generate a quick command to zip everything else. Or you can input a dir struct like:

myfolder
|- thing1.py
|- foldyguy
|-- thing2.csv

and generate a bash script to build that structure for you. So you can then save those .sh files for later to spin up custom file system templates with one command

This is so accurate. I don't know if there is any other example in game history where a disappointing launch was followed up by EIGHT YEARS of dogged, unwavering penance in the form of endless free updates and massive expansions. If they ever say "would you possibly, maybe, consider giving us more money for this one" I will mash that "purchase" button SO HARD.

As parents we always try to dodge specific words when kids are around. Me and my partner regularly using english phrases for things like ice cream, watching movies, candy … It‘s becoming more and more difficult because my kids school english knowledge is improving. What are you doing as a native english speaker?

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@gustavneustadt my dad used to refer to cherry tomatoes as "nature's candy" and would pretend that they were special treats to put on salads, like cherries on ice cream. Sometimes we would eat a whole container of cherry tomatoes in the car on the way home from the grocery store, and to kid me it was an indulgence indistinguishable from downing a whole bag of candy 😅 kids learn a lot from their parents what is 'special'

When writing code, do you start with an ontology / function call graph / other diagram? Or does it emerge from your code as you move classes and functions out of a notebook and into a module?

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

Oop cfg here is standing in for control flow graph, not context free grammar. But tbh we should see as a harbinger of obscurity for our field the increasing frequency of TLA collisions

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@aburka in scenarios where you need to refactor down to the bones... Do you avoid refactoring at the detriment of the ultimate structure, or scrape the foundation into something new? For example, say you are 5 layers deep when you realize that a tree structured relation would better solve your problem as a matrix, but that requires refactoring levels 1-4... what considerations do you make when deciding whether the refactor is worth it? Does that process involve sketching?

janeadams,
