When writing code, do you start with an ontology / function call graph / other diagram? Or does it emerge from your code as you move classes and functions out of a notebook and into a module?

Paper writing is going well

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@mcnutt @scheidegger it definitely "feels" right to have approximately one figure per page... When I read a vis paper with two figureless pages in a row I end up having to read everything twice because my addled millennial attention span absolutely crumples under the wall of text πŸ˜… thank you for the affirmation

i do not understand the apparent assumption that gender neutral restrooms must be single/no stall. i mean yeah private restrooms are nicer than stalls, but when there’s a lot of demand (e.g.: because there’s no nearby women’s room lol) i’d really prefer a stall to waiting however long it takes for people who need more time (e.g., because the gender neutral restroom is also doubling as the wheelchair accessible one; i repeat: lol.)

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@chrisamaphone or in the case of the third floor of WVH where there is only men's and a single gender neutral, somehow the gender neutral becomes the default place for people to poop πŸ’©

The kid's grown six inches in two years and still isn't tall enough to be seen over the hood of these ridiculous death machines prowling our neighborhood streets.

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@sun_addict @DrTCombs I walk 3 miles to work everyday because traffic is so bad that the bus takes the same amount of time as walking. I can't ride a bike because it's too dangerous in a city neighborhood with no bike lanes. But every single day I have to skirt around cars parked on 6in. curbs, sometimes even having to cross the street just to get around them. It's astonishing to me how many people will just turn off and leave their vehicle half on the tall sidewalk and half in busy traffic πŸ₯΄

I found okra in the farmer's market. I knew what it was from tasting shows on Netflix but I've never had it. I bought 4 to taste it and if I like it, I might buy more. What's the best way to eat it? Do you have recipes that you might share with me?

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@eco_amandine We put it in a masaman curry the other day and it was amazing!! Funnily enough we can never find it at the grocery store but the tiny bodega across the street has it πŸ˜… I've found the trick is to cook it similar to broccoli, where it's steamed for a few minutes, but keeps its bright green color. It's also good with just a little sesame oil, a splash of soy sauce, and red pepper flakes

Privacy tip: When you sell or trade-in a vehicle, remember to erase all of your data from the in-car electronics. The car dealerships will NOT do this, although they should be required to.

This wasn’t done for the last few vehicles I’ve purchased. I know one previous owners name, where she lives, what her taste in music is, where her dad lives (and how often she visited him), and what restaurants she often went to. In the wrong hands, this is dangerous as hell.

Someone asked a question about the problem of publishing "least publishable units" of papers, referred to by Michael Ernst as "salami slicing". I agree that atomizing a research process can be substandard, but there's another end of the spectrum... the Guiness World Record Sandwich of paper. So I made a meme to illustrate the spectrum πŸ˜…

janeadams,

@illiannaheger least publishable unit as in smallest amount of content that could still be accepted.. so maybe "minimum publishable unit" is clearer, yes

My story about how telematics data from people's cars unexpectedly raised their insurance rates is on the front page today...

... and this is where it started: me lurking on car forums and seeing comments like this.

If this story doesn't convince lawmakers we need a strong federal privacy law, I'm not sure what will.

Let's use AI to unredact important legal documents, shall we?

I told you to use monospace.
https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2024/03/using-llms-to-unredact-text.html

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@nonlinear wouldn't most redactions either be proper nouns or long passages of text? In the first case, the names and businesses likely would not be in the training set (and prediction would be worse for trying to include them), and in the second case, the probability space would be too large.

However, there is unblurring: https://hackaday.com/2022/02/23/pixelating-text-not-a-good-idea/

ritagiordano, to accessibility

"{viridis} is an R package that presents colour-blind friendly palettes. It improves the graph readability. The advantage of {viridis} is that the palettes are perceptually uniform, easy to print in greyscale and colour-blind friendly. To use the {viridis} in ggplot2 simply ass:
πŸ“Š scale_colour_d()
In the slope graphs I generated in this example, I simply added the function above. The image shows four possible {viridis} palettes.

janeadams,
@janeadams@vis.social avatar

@ritagiordano I would think you would want a categorical rather than continuous color scheme here though? Otherwise you run the risk of a person interpreting darker lines as "more", and/or assigning some sort of ordering to the categories https://blog.datawrapper.de/which-color-scale-to-use-in-data-vis/
