FYI, someone just asked me, "Could you please put a CW on those US politics posts?"

I said no sorry,, just mute me.

I don't understand CWing political posts. And that doesn't mean you need to @ me explaining why. I know THEIR reasons, I just disagree with them and won't do it.

I respect CWs for other things, but not politics. Politics is news and people need to be aware of what's happening. It's not gory or violent, it's politics.

Kthxbye.

I override all CWs anyway. I also follow several political sites from as many countries as i find. Oh well...

One of my absolutely favorite Linux utilities is "sshfs", that allows you to mount other machine's file systems locally over ssh. I use it everywhere, between Linux machines, Chromebooks, and even sometimes Windows boxes. Absolutely brilliant and incredibly easy to setup and use compared with various other file system sharing models.

I've been using *nix systems for 40 years, and I'd never heard of this capability prior to your post.

Thank you for making me aware of it!

Former CEO of Twitter wanted to build a social protocol no-one can control, like SMTP or HTTP for social media. Bluesky’s ATProto was supposed to be an open source protocol that Twitter could eventually utilize, but then Musk happened and Bluesky started taking it to the wrong direction and everything fell apart in Dorsey’s mind.

A very revealing interview. I now see even more future in W3C’s ActivityPub.

IMO one of the smartest things you can do to try and be a better causal inference thinker is this: be mindful and sensitive to the fact that "looking harder means finding more."

In every domain, in every area of science, this is a very critical thing to understand, and very very difficult to remember because despite feeling simple it is actually very complicated.

jrredho,
@jrredho@mastodon.world avatar

@grimalkina

That's funny because it's so easy to see how many recent advances in science have been fueled by better measurement methods themselves.

I'm thinking of things like fMRIs for neurology, better space telescopes and sensors in cosmology. There are many, many other examples.

They often have nothing to do with "statistical methods" al all.

jrredho,
@jrredho@mastodon.world avatar

@grimalkina

You may not be grokking mine. :)

All I was saying was that your point of "looking closer requires statistical methods" has an equally important aspect: Technology itself is a key driver in being able to make the measurements that will be available to look more closely at phenomena.

It was complementary, not mutually exclusive to yours.

the practice many browsers have adopted of truncating URLs in the address bar to the hostname is emblematic of the decline and commercially driven infantilization of the web.

understanding URLs — their roles and the ways and whys of how they are constructed — was an elementary skill of the original view-source web.

hiding complete URLs encourages people to become ignorant consumers of mysterious information services, rather than informed participants in a public forum.

From 1989 — 2021, typical working families in the US saw negligible increases in their real incomes and wealth.

Meanwhile, the wealthiest 1% became $29 trillion richer.

Trickle-down economics did not work.

It still does not work.

It will never work.

It's not meant to work.

jrredho,

Trickle down economics has never not been bullshit.

Yet it always passed when it's voted on. I wonder why?

nekohayo, to random
@nekohayo@mastodon.social avatar

I did some testing on a Windows machine and tried out for the first time… I'm shocked. This thing is black magic.

How did they manage to do full disk encryption that can be toggled on/off instantly? I was expecting it to rewrite the whole drive, like what would happen with LUKS on Linux OSes/utils, but no: even a whole existing C:\ drive with Win installed, you just enable encryption, it reboots in seconds instead of minutes/hours, and it's done.

What sorcery is this?!

jrredho,
@jrredho@mastodon.world avatar

@nekohayo

It is sounding suspiciously like the "unBitlockered" drive is actually encrypted from the get go, it just has a null password.

When you enable Bitlocker, it just changes the password. You could easily do this on a LUKS-encrypted drive.

Obviously, this would be easy to learn. But, I'm not a believer in magic. Mystery, yes; magic, no.

Another streaming service account just expired, with no reminder from the company selling it (Apple).

So it's down to zero accounts, which is the right number. We'll subscribe to one service for a month at a time, rotating among them and planning ahead to ensure that multiple-part shows are all there.

And our public library is a fabulous resource for (limited) streaming and DVDs (though Hollywood is trying to make everything pay-per-view).

Conservative estimate of annual savings: >$600.

jrredho,
@jrredho@mastodon.world avatar

@dangillmor

I haven't given up streaming, but at ~$75/month for two households, each in its own distant town, I'm still paying far less than I was paying for cable. And that was for only one household. Someone, somewhere is losing a fair bit of money on this "experiment". Which, of course, means that we can expect things to change asap. :(

Realizing how many software engineering conversations pull probability estimates out of thin air is gonna radicalize me, a person who assumes that every probability estimate is OF COURSE based on empirical data and real statistics

jrredho,
@jrredho@mastodon.world avatar

@grimalkina

"Based on" is so, uh, imprecise itself, isn't it?

Anyone throwing out any estimate, statistical or probabilistic, should disclose all the key underlying modeling done and assumptions that they've made, along the sins they've committed along the way.

They should also give some description of the how good the estimate is.

All of that is in my humble opinion, of course. :)

Might be wrong here, but seems like this may be a bigger deal than a clerical error as is being widely reported:

Rejected and ‘returned for correction’: Docs for Trump’s $175M bond get bounced >>> https://lawandcrime.com/high-profile/rejected-and-returned-for-correction-docs-for-trumps-175m-bond-get-bounced/

It may be that the bond company didn't report their financials because they have insufficient collateral to secure a bond of this magnitude. In which case the bond is no good, Trump doesn't have a bond, and he is out of time.

Let's see how this gets resolved...

jrredho,

Was there not some point that the prosecutor's office was making about the money in that account restricted from being used in some other way, such as collateral for a different loan, concurrently?

    Yes, there are some things that Google Search can do that others cannot. Use it in these extraordinary circumstances only.

    I'm enjoying the hell out of the new season of , but the supernatural vibes are proving really challenging for my spouse to handle. On the one hand, I'm enjoying how they're leaning into the cosmic horror underpinning the series, on the other hand, this is literal nightmare fuel for my partner who I hope to continue to watch it with. We may end up needing to find another show to share (we both really enjoyed the recent season of ).

    I was also surprised how unpopular season 4 is proving to be on the TD subreddit, it seems like they only like season 1. I thought 3 was thought-provoking and enjoyable as well, though Mahershala Ali obviously carried a lot of it.

    Affirmative Action is a way to try to right generational wrongs that have caused damage to entire portions of our population, damages that continue to reverberate today.

    Given that the US continues to underfund public primary education in poor and underprivileged communities where generally minorities live in higher proportion, yes, this is breaking history and the future for many in this country.
