Good morning, Mastodon!

It's my turn for a and adventure. I'm going from Parma to Brussels to speak at a project management conference.

My route is Parma - Milan - Brig - Basel - Strasbourg - Brussels. 5 trains, 4 countries, plenty of possibilities that the trip takes an unexpected turn :)

First one is on time at 6:10. Let's do this!

jtwcornell91,
@jtwcornell91@hostux.social avatar

@Andrawaag @mart1oeil @rafa_font @trains @Ruth_Mottram If you go to https://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en and click "Seat only (no ticket)" (instead of the red search button) you can get just a seat reservation (which as you say is not required) with DB for €4.90 per itinerary. (Haven't tried it with the new booking system.) Another perk if you're travelling with kids (in which case you probably want seat reservations anyway) is that a "family reservation" costs only 2x the price of a one-seat reservation.

jtwcornell91,
@jtwcornell91@hostux.social avatar

@Andrawaag @mart1oeil @rafa_font @trains @Ruth_Mottram I thought Germany didn't require seat reservations for Interrail/Eurail. The real headache is in France where the reservation supplements are limited and can cost as much as a ticket. (Also Spain where paper reservations are required for fast trains.)

For the first time since 1992 (when I was 12) I’m completely disinterested by the UK General Election.

Sunak and the Tories will lose, Labour in uninspiring, the Lib Dems weedy, Greens weak and SNP weakened, and Reform simply grim. And Brexit is the elephant none of them will touch.

As I’m still a UK citizen I will vote, but it’s with less determination than ever before.

jtwcornell91,
@jtwcornell91@hostux.social avatar

@albertcardona @jon the problem is that the UK still uses first-past-the-post in single-member districts. The Greens were able to become a viable party in Germany because of proportional representation and coalition governments.

If the thermostat in your Hilton looks like this and doesn’t do jack shit, it’s because it’s configured to only run when its extremely faulty presence sensor detects you doing light aerobics in your room - it’s easy to fix though!
Remove the cover screw with a Philips head
Hit the CONFIG button and switch modes with the F/C button until you hit something like “E-5” which is Bullshit Mode
Flip it down to E-0 to disable the presence sensor
Hit on/off to save then turn it back on!

jtwcornell91,

@taber reminds me of the low tech equivalent in European hotels where the electricity (including the AC) shuts off unless the key card is in a slot by the door. Fortunately any plastic card of the right size works in case you want to go to dinner and not return to an oven.

Happy Europe Day from Arles

jtwcornell91,
@jtwcornell91@hostux.social avatar

@patrick @jon Arles to York is not so bad, although the obvious routing with changes only in Paris and London (11h9m) only works if you leave at 06:43. DB even tells you to take the RER D from Gare de Lyon to Gare du Nord, although it doesn't know the timetable. Still, 2h26m should be adequate even with Eurostar checkin. 30m between St. Pancras and Kings Cross could be a little tight, but there are later trains to York. New York, otoh...

jtwcornell91,
@jtwcornell91@hostux.social avatar

@patrick @jon Oh, Wikipedia tells me it's York, Pennsylvania. That explains the flag.

“How green are Europe’s railways?”

It's obvious that if I take a trip by train, rather than by car or plane, it is the green choice.

But modal share for rail is marginal, and decisions made by politicians and the industry are preventing the step change we need - due to the climate crisis

New post 👇
https://jonworth.eu/how-green-are-europes-railways/

jtwcornell91,
@jtwcornell91@hostux.social avatar

@jon oof. The one time I took FlixBus in Europe was Annecy to Genève, where there was no reasonable train routing.

jtwcornell91,
@jtwcornell91@hostux.social avatar

@jon you mention displacing FlixBus trips with more rail capacity; I would have liked to see Intercity bus services on that green comparison chart. Got to be better than autos and I suspect there are places where a direct bus beats a bad train connection (which is an infra problem). But I suspect there's a ceiling on how much travel could be absorbed by buses because fewer people are willing to sit on a bus than a train.

OK, let’s have a look into the 🔮 and see what might happen in German politics in 2024

It’s going to be a long 🧵, but I hope it’s useful

A few precursors to start:

  • This is what I think what will happen, not what I want to happen
  • Any errors or biases in this are mine and mine alone
  • I am writing this in English for an international audience
jtwcornell91,
@jtwcornell91@hostux.social avatar

@jon isn't there some chance that BSW removing the tankies and other objectionable elements from Die Linke would render them an acceptable option for dissatisfied voters on the left edge of the SPD?

Just seen 12 runs scored of a single ball. Never seen that before.

Bowler messed up a delivery and the ball bounced twice. That’s a no ball: 2 runs and a free hit.

The batter is still allowed to hit the no ball. He hit it for 4. Total of 6.

A no ball must be bowled again. And it’s a free hit which means the batter can’t be out directly from that ball (they can be run out). Anyway, the batter hit the free hit for 6.

So a total of 12 runs from one ball!

And a new version of the board game is ready!

Version 1.2.0 brings some adaptions to game to avoid players getting stuck in the remote corners of Europe - and this needs some changes to the board as well, which has been redesigned in some places

Files to download and explanations: https://crossborderrail.trainsforeurope.eu/boardgame/

jtwcornell91,
@jtwcornell91@hostux.social avatar

@jon still having issues with the margins. Might just go get it poster printed at a print shop. There isn't a board v 1.3 about to come out or anything, is there?

jtwcornell91,
@jtwcornell91@hostux.social avatar

@jon Finally got a chance to print it out. I don't have easy access to a printer larger than A3 (and that is b/w), so I'm trying to print the board on multiple sheets. It might be useful to have a version of the board as a 15-page A4 PDF. I produced my own with the unix command

pdfposter -p 891x1050mm BOARD-1.2.0.pdf BOARD-1.2.0_pages.pdf

but have yet to see how the printing works with margins etc (plus the fact that it's actually a US letter printer, not A4).

This behaviour is life-threatening and disgusting.

This morning on our school street (photo left on an ordinary day), a motorist thought it was unacceptable that he was not allowed to drive into the street... a street where children and parents were walking and cycling to school.

After some yelling, the driver accelerated and drove straight past the crowd barriers into the school street... onto a metal pole.

I hope the driver does not get off with a simple fine.

#schoolstreet #schoolstraat

A white SUV has collided with and is perched atop a black bollard on a brick-paved street, rendering the vehicle immobile. A person wearing a reflective vest is present near a red barrier to the right.
