Beauty comes both, straight and crooked; young and fresh, bent and old, and then rotting dead. All together at the same time, at the same place. Nature knows wisdom. It's we, the people, who don't get it and ask for explanations and simple meaning. And then mess up.

I am slowly getting aware of the powerful concept of multi-mode bicycling with the #Brompton. I can just hop on any local bus wherever there is a bus stop. This extends the range which I can reach within a weekend tour tremendously. I started my recent three-day tour in Stockholm, took a bus to Norrtälje (2.30 €), then took another bus out to the island of Björkö, which cost me another 2.30 €. After 3 hours I was in the middle of the beauty of the Archipelago. (1/2)

I bycycled all the way to the island of Singö, the most northern point of my tour. I spent the night on the shore of the Baltic Sea. I talked with a man about bicycling in the Netherlands, which he considered top-notch. I countered his opinion: To me, this part of Sweden I am bicycling right now is by far better. Best roads, virtually no traffic, and enough bakeries and food stores. Finally, let's not forget the freedom to roam in Sweden. Top-notch!

I would like to share the track of my recent 4-days tour through Uppland, Sweden. I usually start planning a route with the app BRouter (Android) with the profile "trekking" for finding suitable routes. Next I check the chosen route and might manually improve it by using smaller "no-name" roads. Quite often I also check the pavement of the road by using Google Street View.

On day 3 of our tour we bicycled from Arboga to Eskilstuna, Sweden. On the picture you can see Lake Hjälmaren. The lake's peaceful surface perfectly mirrors my state of mind after three days of touring through Sweden's countryside: All the world's noisy nervousness and merciless madness, amplified to the extreme by all the media, is far, so far away from me.

Today, I was out on an island-hopping tour in the Stockholm Archipelago with my . First bicycling, then riding with a ferry, then bicycling, then taking a commuter boat, and finally bicycling again. The Archipelago east of Stockholm has approximately 24000 islands; so, there is a lot to hop out there, a perfect place to travel multi-modal with a folding bike.

Yesterday I was out on my favourite mountainbike-like trail again. I try to get over the roots and stones in slow motion; real fun, I must say. I feel a bit like a circus artist here and there. The Brompton is a really versatile, little machine with lots of use cases.

Someone recently asked how I carry water on my tours with the .

Sometimes I only use a pouch attached to the handlebars for a bottle of water (0.6 lt).

On longer tours I use the big Borroughs bag in the front. This provides two rather large bags which are easily accessible. Each of them can hold up to two bottles (2 times 0.6 + 0.5 lt)

In the back, I can carry another large bottle (1.5 liters).

Get moving! Yes, I mean you! I know several people whom I wished they would finally get on their bicycles and get moving. So far, they only talked about it, but never really acted. They have a variety of excuses: They "have no time"; "their body is not in shape"; "it's too cold right now, I wait until it gets warmer"; "my bicycle would need to get fixed first"; and many more. I would like to urge them to lift their bodies now.

In other news:

(1) I took my out for a personal record high: 128 km from Würzburg to Fulda, Germany, in a one-day ride.

(2) For the first time in my life I saw the famous Fritillaria meleagris. See photo.

(3) Had a really nice chat with a 90 year old man who still bicycles 30 km, day in, day out, all year round.

I am in Köln, Germany. Yesterday, I quite often got reminded of the writer Kurt Tucholsky and his text
"Deutsch für Amerikaner". Here is an excerpt:

Eingang verboten.
Ausgang verboten.
Durchgang verboten. [...]
Rauchen verboten.
Parken verboten.
Durchfahrt verboten. [...]
Guten Tag, wie fühlen Sie? [...]

For the non-German speaking world: You only need to understand one word: "verboten".

Recently, I tested the train infrastructure in Europe. I took a roundtrip from Stockholm to Austria and back. It consisted of 7 train rides. The result was this:

Trains 1-3: Could not take or did not operate due to strike of train drivers in Germany.

4: Deutsche Bahn (DB) cancelled, needed to take a later alternative

5: The only DB train which was on time!

6: DB was 135 minutes late

Train 7: Missed, needed to take a later alternative.

Today's plan is to make it with the train from Munich to Hamburg. There, I plan to stop for the night, and tomorrow to continue onwards to Copenhagen, and finally Stockholm. Had a lovely 70-years birthday party with lots of old friends from university time. It lasted until 3 in the morning; life is hard.

Wo sind denn die @fedibikes_de gern unterwegs (gewesen)?

Randbedingungen:

  • mit Zug gut erreichbar,
  • nicht Berlin/Brandenburg
  • möglichst Asphalt

Question for the community: I've been trying to switch from driving to bicycling, and keep wishing I had a rear view mirror (as a speeding SUV comes rushing past my left side...)... thoughts on mirrors for bicycles? Yay? Nay? If Yay, what kinds would you recommend?

kcposch,
@kcposch@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr I have used a mirror attached to the helmet since 1992. I cannot think of bicycling without it.

In 1979, I got my first job at Graz University of Technology. I worked at the Lustbühel Observatory in Graz, Austria. My boss then was Professor Willibald Riedler who introduced me to the beauty of space research. Today Euclid's first images were published by the European Space Agency. The moment was very exciting and truly emotional for me.

I got my exactly a year ago. With this anniversary, I took it out into the wonderful autumn forest. What a joy it was to dive through the colourful leaves! After 6000 km, my Brompton has become a trusted partner in all forms of crimes. My newest fun is to treat ourselves with some short mountainbike-like trail sections, which I try to master in super slow motion. It feels like being an artist in a circus, albeit nobody watching. The Brompton seems to like such treats.

@badlogic I bought the after noticing that it is a lot more versatile than I initially thought. The engineering of this bike is incredible. I also like the story of the inventor and the company.

Congratulations to your successes with your project Heisse Preise.
