@kkarhan@torproject
Every time I turn around I run into some attempt to thwart my privacy. Lately it's been a lot of websites that want me to turn off my ad blocker so they can track me... you know companies want all that data-- big numbers, that's what we are.
Oh that's horrible... I didn't know that happened!
And it's crazy-- people that say that are ignorant. They have no idea what they're talking about. And sometimes that drives fear too... like in the story in one of the comments on that YouTube video you recently posted-- a person said they were using terminal in Ubuntu in a library years ago and someone got scared and thought they were hacking into the library's network 😂
@kkarhan@godotengine@defold People need to stop trusting commercial, closed-source apps so much, they're allowed to completely uproot their existing practices in the name of profit. FOSS forever.
You know #Russia is raising the #IronFirewall hard when almost 50% of all your #Snowflake users are from the last 5 days and before that you rarely had single digits per week...
@kkarhan that's one of my gripes with FDE using passwords. You need to enter the password physically during boot. Using a long and complicated password is anything from a major inconvenience to impossible as there's no way that I'm aware of to copy/paste from a password manager.
Contrast with using e.g. GPG after login where you have your normal password management environment.
If you set up FDE you should really use a Yubikey or similar hardware crypto token.
@fedops well, there are some methods to be able to SSH into a machine even at that point, tho I've yet to see these and evaluate them...
That being said on a Server I'm accustomed to manually restarting systems and manually mounting a LUKS on them.
Personally I'd use @nitrokey for that since they opensource their hardware as well bit I'd not rely on a dongle nor biometrics as both can be used against someone's consent!
People constantly hate it but the standard has been established because alternatives are either not solving everything or only nieche cases or completely fall on their face once they encounter something they weren't designed for...
For better or worse...
Like #Tablature, the #init script of #Notation: It gets people started but fails for anything more complex.
