Why and where, my kind fediferse friends, would one use those?

Morning.

Here it is, several thousand years in the making: the protostellar jet HH212 as seen in the infrared by .

We discovered this jet in 1993, glowing in the light of shocked molecular hydrogen at 2.12 microns, as gas emerges symmetrically at about 100 km/s from the two poles of a young protostar not far from the Horsehead Nebula in Orion.

Our new JWST image spans six wavelengths & is ten times sharper than any previous infrared image.

    Did you know you can a Gaggia Classic Pro (or the new Pro Evo)?

    There's videos out there showing you how to do a hack with the Gaggia Classic pro (open the steam wand to reduce the grouphead pressure at the start of a shot).

    But you can also use the same trick to lower the ENDING pressure on your shot pulls, much like a spring lever machine.

    In fact, a deft hand can really control a declining pressure for better espresso shots. Own one? Try it!

    olaf,

    If you're programming a game where a boat moves through water, you might be tempted (as I would) to change the V-shape angle of the waves behind the boat based on how fast the boat was moving!

    What if I told you that that V-shaped angle is always 19.47°, regardless of how fast the boat is travelling? 😱

    This pattern even holds true for a duck traversing a pond. 🦆

    The envelope of these waves stands at a fixed angle, and the wake has a characteristic feathered pattern.

    olaf,
    @olaf@social.secret-wg.org avatar

    @pikuma under the assumption that the duck is in water at roughly room temperature and 1bar pressure. A duck in mercury would be a different story. (Mostly because the duck would die)

    @timbray

    Ohhh this brings back good memories …

    For context: CDM is cold dark matter, MOND is Modified Newtonian Dynamics. Both are ways to explain the discrepancy between mass determined from rotation curves of galaxies, and mass determined from light curves.

    2FA service is [rapidly becoming] infrastructure critical to the functioning of the Internet. It is a service that benefits greatly from a 2 sided network effect and is (therefore) consolidated. That gives me pause.

    Physicist John Archibald Wheeler was born in 1911.

    A titan of 20th century science, Wheeler introduced the S-Matrix; developed the first general theory of fission with Neils Bohr; coined many terms (”worm hole” and “it from bit”) and popularized others (“black hole”); and trained Feynman, Everett, Thorne, and a host of others.

    An older wheeler standing in front of a chalkboard. His hands are clasped. The diagram behind him shows a direct path from point A to point B labeled “classical,” and a wave emanating from A and passing to B labeled “quantum.”
