Do you need fediverse instance admins to volunteer their instances to host the migrating accounts? Do you already have adequate target instances for everyone?

Not sure if other people do this, but I use notifications of favorites/boosts as a discovery mechanism for accounts to possibly follow.

I mean it's a potential sign they have similar interests, so might as well visit the profile and see if they post interesting stuff you want to see more of.

I'll often favorite a few posts along the way too, which I hope doesn't seem too weird to people!

@stefan I thought there was a bot somewhere linking the most interacted posts but I can't find any such thing. @TrendingBot posts about hashtags and looks at mastodon.social only.

I guess the #FediBuzz relay (https://relay.fedi.buzz) may help in fetching the activities, though their own https://fedi.buzz/ only exposes the trending hashtags.

I finally caught the idea why fedi feels superior to other platforms (besides the obvious) - reacts.

where did you see a dislike button last time? i only see it on stackexchange where it serves only functional purposes and disqus where it serves only social purposes.

here we have a bunch of conditionally negative reacts and full freedom of expression. my favs are woozy cats and wrenches. they also can be completely ironic, can you imagine an ironic dislike button? i certainly can't

platforms with only likes absolutely suck. fuck you for your "positive engagement" farming, my people need TOOLS to express ourselves, we need WRENCHES 🔧🔧🔧

Has anyone built a tool that maps which instances* federate with which —something to visualize who’s federating (or not federating) with whom?

@tero Funny.

Apologists: "A giant corporation with billions of users is better positioned to foster a diverse community".

Reality: moderation already makes "embarrassing" mistakes, by their own admission, despite a federated community comparable to two mid-sized Mastodon instances (1 for USA and 1 for Japan).

More technosolutionism follows in the same spirit.

The fact that you can follow the president of the United States (@potus) from your Mastodon account instead of being forced to have an X or Threads account for it is a huge W in my book. Of course our team is fully available to help if they'd want to set up Mastodon on whitehouse.gov. I believe governments should not rely on 3rd party platforms to connect with their constituents.

Apparently not many people believe me when I say that "normal" users using the "block this domain" option, is functionally just a mute....

There's gonna be LOTS of very mad people when they find out for themselves that meta/Threads can still see their posts....😬🤦‍♂️

To actually block Threads, you have to be on an instance that actually blocks them. As of right now, the biggest instance that blocks Threads is masto.to

So all this talk most of you are doing, means absolutely nothing because the majority of you are still federated....

Rusty, to mastodon
@Rusty@cubhub.social avatar

The same thing that drove me nuts about the BridgyFed/BlueSky bridge discourse also drives me nuts with the Threads discourse. :neofox_what: Why isn't there a fediblock level that lets admins default to suspending a server, but allows users to opt back into federating with them? Is there a technical reason for it?

I really don't think it should've been on the BridgyFed developer to build an opt-in system that rightfully should've already been in Mastodon, the same way I don't think blocking Threads outright is the best solution (granted it's better than openly federating, hence why they're suspended here). Why doesn't Mastodon have a built-in system for letting users opt-in to federating with a server? :confused_dog:

Well, it's only been a few days since Threads announced the ability to turn on Fediverse integration, but I can't help but feel disappointed with the lack of users actually turning it on as of yet...

My instance only knows about 250-300 accounts that have turned on Federation. I know this isn't nearly the full list, but it's obviously going to be limited because of "opt-in" which goes against ActivityPub to the core...😬 🤦‍♂️

so misskey.io announced they're introducing a temporary measure against the spambots by ignoring all posts, boosts, replies and whatnot from other instances, UNLESS a user from a different instance is followed by someone on misskey.io

if you wanna maintain communication with misskey.io's users you should make an account from there and follow your main that is on another instance (the announcement itself recommends this method)

lea, to FediMeta
@lea@ordinary.cafe avatar

I'm (not) sorry if this sounds like gatekeeping, but if you aren't technical enough and/or don't have the time to administrate an instance properly, please do not host a fediverse server. At the very least, don't allow open registrations or keep it single-user.

I've seen users losing their entire social graph due to instances randomly shutting down or losing their data, which is unfair to those users and paints a negative light of fediverse. And now, we're seeing the entire fediverse bogged down with spam because of instances that fail to mitigate bots, affecting the experience of everyone else.

In a related light, it's concerning how a small group of actors (at least based on our internal intelligence) can degrade the experience of the fediverse this effectively. It signals that we have a have a long ways to go in terms of the technologies, strategies, and tools we use to mitigate bad actors in the fediverse. What we currently have isn't enough for a resilient fediverse.

julie, to fediverse

I think Jo is singing the song of the canary in the coal mine about surveillance here. If CCP is monitoring queer folks in the Fediverse you know other governments are too. And some will be quieter than others.

If any , , or folks with brain cycles to spare are able to look more into this that'd be a huge service for all of us.

@rigo There was never a mention of it being a financial problem though. If the draconian data purging was introduced to spare resources on the DB, I'd understand and we could help tune it. If LQDN asked for money to afford a beefier DB, I'd be happy to contribute.
