I never thought that blood test results would bring me so much joy:

‘She has the bloodwork of a young, healthy dog again’

(Normal bilirubin is up to 0.9. She had 8.0 when she was admitted!!)

Pretty big NAS.

And thanks to someone here, I call it BanaNAS. It’s got 2x12TB drives in RAID1 right now but I’ll keep expanding it as I go.

Asus’s system for managing the NAS is pretty interesting. I thought I would put Unraid on it, but I haven’t had to. It takes a while to get used to, but it works.

The only thing more stressful than being a child in Singapore is being a parent

Not surprised at all. East Asian patriachies can fuck off

I too experienced many points of friction when visiting and working in China. My nationality and ethnicity was often either positive (Singaporeans are so good at English and Mandarin!!) when geo-political relations were good, or absolutely tragic (you are all hanjian race traitors!!) when they were not.

I’m suspicious of all attempts to bring us into the ‘Chinese fold’.

English is also imprecise. The words are just ‘Chinese’ (nationality) or ‘Chinese’ (ethnicity). In various Chinese languages there are different words. ‘Zhongguoren’ (citizen of the PRC), which we never use to describe ourselves because we are not. Also the PRC didn’t exist when most of our ancestors left. Huaqiao / huashang / huayi / tang ren (overseas Chinese, of varying degrees of China centrism). I prefer the terms we use in SE Asian or S Chinese languages rather than Mandarin, though.

A house guest came to visit and I was able to make masala chai from scratch, just like others would make for me. I’m proud of having done this so many times it’s now second nature to me!

I follow food YouTubers from certain countries not err, known for their culinary prowess, and it’s just an anthropological thing at this point. ‘Best recipe ever!! Everyone will love it!!’ And it’s something they would get me uninvited from dinner parties in my part of the world, like if I showed up with unseasoned potatoes.

It really reminds me that people are so different

I recently had vegan Puerto Rican, Mexican, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and I’ve decided that my earlier resistance to vegan food was towards ‘health food’; all flavorful foods are good for me, vegan or not.

And I will never be into ‘health food’ or food with ‘no flavor’ or ‘fat’. Glad some of you all like that tho

Cookie got a clean bill of health from the vet, who saved her when she had a close shave last month! She said Cookie is doing really well, though her issues are still ‘a ticking time bomb’. We are hoping we can manage them medically and keep her happy and comfy before that happens. I’m really glad to have extra time with her.

Annoyed that all the Indian and Malaysian and Thai and Singaporean and Indonesian aunties in my life who refused to give exact measurements and times and said ‘it’s done when it’s done’ actually had the best cooking advice

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

Though I think this only really works if you know what you are trying to make and have had it a lot. When I cook Thai or Chinese food now I’m just like ‘it’s done when it’s done’. It just smells and tastes.. ‘right’ (which is also what the aunties used to say)

But if you haven’t had a lot of a cuisine before then it’s perfectly fine to use a good recipe or cookbook with measurements. It’s just a map, though. You can get there any way you want.

I think it speaks to being mindful about food and the cooking process. That it’s not just a thing to output, but a process to think about. Not all spices are the same. No two ingredients are always 100% the same. Especially in that part of the world where ingredients are rarely super processed. When a grandma says a cup or a spoon it’s often her particular cup and spoon. Not your spoon. But the spoon she used forever.

Thinking of this as I manifest making a Yemeni mandi from some corner of my brain where some auntie showed me a pinch of this and a bit of that, but it’s somehow coming together

I was yelling about the NAR Christians for the last decade in Singapore, where local acolytes also have implemented versions of this theology (there’s a cinema with evangelical Christian certified content for example)

You can’t divorce that movement from the parent theology, which is this stuff. Except in Asia it becomes 80% about prosperity, 5% about God, 15% about MLM

It’s not lost on me that many electeds in San Francisco are simply latching on to the first available Chinese American person, usually conservative, and then saying all Chinese Americans want tough on crime pro-police politicians like them (and ignoring other types of people who do not want those things)
