@wa7iut Oh cool. I knew that Ethernet started out as CSMA/CD shared bus topologies and then evolved into switched fabric but never heard the story of exactly how that jump happened.
@drcaberry
I know you’re busy, so I forward things from time to time. I’m especially interested in tech in African countries because the point of view on tech and its usefulness is often so different from here.
Americans assume all the interesting tech/STEM news comes out of Silicon Valley when SV is just a small part.
did you ever meet Prof. Shep Salon at RPI? Back in the 80s I did a lot of work on finite element modeling of magnetic devices, mostly working with a group at McGill University, but visited Shep Salon’s group at RPI a few times.
Ah yes. The people who love to eat queen leaf cutter ants. You'd think I'd be horrified, and I was at first... that is until I found out that fans of this traditional dish are behind some of the most effective anti-pesticide, and ant conservation movements in the region.
The only way anyone gets to enjoy pan-fried queen ants is if there are big nuptial flights, big nuptial flights means huge healthy colonies.
So, in a twist I view the people who like to fry ant queens as awesome.
@mekkaokereke
I spent a week in Detroit a couple of years ago doing some work at Wayne State, I stayed at the Motor City Cassino and Hotel (where hosts put me 😂), the buffet was a fabulous place to people watch. It seemed like there was tremendous potential and entrepreneurial spirit in Detroit, but it’s not being used or is somehow stymied ☹️ I enjoyed my time there. Detroit should have a great future.
It would be great to connect to STEM in Africa. I suspect their approach to tech would be different. There’s a company in Somalia that provides small solar units for farming and rural areas that seems scaled just right. Also has an innovative aporoach to business
@azonenberg back in the 80s I did head/media design for disk drives. This was very early DSP days. It’s so amazing to see what you can do now and the rates involved (following your project).
@wa7iut Yep things have definitely got a lot more capable.
And I'm aiming to break down barriers by open sourcing more advanced capabilities too. There's nothing else out there even remotely close to this feature set that's not $$$$.
