@kubikpixel @ivorytusk Eine Freundin hat einige Jahre in Indien gelebt und in der Entwicklungshilfe gearbeitet. Sie sagt dazu, dass Clickworker tatsächlich viel zu schlecht bezahlt sind für diesen Job. In der Realität ist die Alternative aber kein besser bezahlter Job, sondern gar kein Job. Wir können im reichen Europa natürlich finden, diese Jobs gehörten abgeschafft, aber das ist eine ziemlich privilegierte Sicht…

@kubikpixel @ivorytusk Die IT-Branche braucht einerseits Gewerkschaften, die sich für die Interessen der Mitarbeitenden einsetzen. Und andererseits bräuchte es internationalen Druck auf Niedriglohnländer, einen Mindestlohn einzuführen.

@tobybaier @andreas_tengicki @vampirdaddy @root42 Es gibt viele Speicherlösungen, die mehr Sinn machen. Pumpspeicherkraftwerke (die in Zukunft wegen des Klimawandels öfter leer stehen werden), Gewichtsspeicher, selbst Batterien sind heute ökologisch sinnvoller

A University of Georgia student was sent this notice of interim suspension after he was arrested Monday at a protest.

The email at 5:09 pm asked him to explain why he shouldn't be suspended by 5:10 pm or it would go into effect at 5:11 pm.

@alexip718 Seriously, if you want to study at an excellent university that respects you and won’t bankrupt you don‘t study in the US… we have some of the best universities in the world over here - a semester at the ETH Zurich costs about 700$, not 82’000$/a like the MIT. Then again, this is socialism…

Apple’s Vision Pro is a bad product with an even worse vision for the future of computation.

New sales numbers prove it’s a failure, but more than that it shows the idea of tech’s inevitability is a myth. We have the collective power to stop tech that doesn’t serve us.

@aral Oh jeez, why can‘t people learn from history? iPod? iPhone? iPad? AppleWatch? Every new product category had a sales slump after a few months. And smartasses immediately and smugly explained how these devices were too expensive, hadn‘t enough features or any other criticism you can hear now about the VisionPro.
Well, didn‘t turn out too bad for Apple. Every.Single.Time.
Learn from it!

@aral Better? I remember that up until the early 10s I never made phone calls on the road because I didn’t want to be the only dork to do that.
Expectations change, the technology shrinks. Apple has the money and the patience to wait for it.

@Bam @jcriecke @potus The embassy of Iran was destroyed by an Israeli air strike. Embassies and ambassadors were deemed untouchable for centuries, if not millennia. What did Israel think would happen if it crossed this red line? I’m afraid that attack was only a start, Iran will seek revenge in a much more drastic way.

My friend used an AI song generator to generate a comedy country song about crabs, which was very entertaining, but the fact that this software exists makes me deeply sad because people have truly devalued the arts far beyond anything I could ever have imagined. In the same way as they are with images, people are going to use garbage AI generated music instead of paying actual musicians

@sophie @frederic AI is to the 21st century what photography was to the 19th. Mediocre artists will become obsolete, great artists will use the new tools to redefine what art means. It may give hope to artists that even today there are still painters and classical music… the new always complements the old if the old is good enough.

    @aral since the 17th century "artists" is used for "one skilled in any art or craft" (including professors, surgeons, craftsmen, cooks).
    I‘d argue that software engineers are artists too. AI models are not created by some abstract "trillion dollar companies" but by humans. Your class struggle rethoric is undercomplex and not helpful here (and I‘m saying this as a left social democrat).

    @tante @ivorytusk Whoever writes a text in February 2024 about how AI sucks and still uses GPT 3 to prove his point has no clue. GPT 4 provided an excellent answer to the first question.
    I‘m still not convinced most humans are more than gullible stochastic parrots, guided by a sense of probability in everything they do. I mean, a majority of US citizens voted for Trump. And is ready to do it again! Even GPT 3 would be way more intelligent…
