It really shows how limited the EV revolution actually is. Just a handful of enthusiastic with no one willing to put up the trillions needed to make it practical for everyone. Now, it’s pretty much all on one company. My personal opinion is that this is doomed to failure, or at least will create a huge crisis down the road since it is all controlled by one guy. I think it is inevitable that cars will drive BEVs out of the market because of this and many other reasons.

The obsession with pure BEVs and only pure BEVs is a mistake. There are much better ideas today. And in the long-run, something like cars, which are basically hybrids with a fuel cell instead of an engine, would be a better solution.

@PaulWermer Aren't BEVs bigger and heavier than existing cars? This suggests BEVs make the problem worse.

The ideal solution is mass transit. We should avoid cars if at all possible. Cars are only for situations where they are unavoidable.

Yes, we need more non-car based transportation ideas.

@PaulWermer It will certainly be heavier. But the main issue is that without the like-for-like replacement, it will be a difficult transition. At which point, you might as well have mass transit instead.

Indian Railways plans to operate 35 hydrogen-powered trains.

Under its “Hydrogen for Heritage” initiative project, Indian Railways is planning to field trials of the first prototype hydrogen trains, which will take place on the Jin-Sonipat section of Northern Railway in 2024. The trail is part of its bigger plans to eventually operate 35 H2 trains.

@mrblissett @michaelti That's the propaganda that BEV companies want people to listen to. In reality, the vast majority of energy is made from fossil fuels. Including most of electricity production. And they certainly don't want people to know that nearly all battery production is powered by fossil fuels.

The difference is that hydrogen can actually get off of that dependence. The alternatives cannot.

@mrblissett @michaelti Green hydrogen is made from wind and solar. It is an extension of renewable energy. Something the alternatives are not, at least not completely. For instance, batteries imply a huge dependency on raw materials and the production thereof.

@michaelti @mrblissett That's not saying anything special. It just means you need to make it with green energy and not fossil fuel energy.

Also, people have fundamentally misunderstood how renewable energy will work. You no longer have a stable energy source, so your most important need becomes energy storage. Which is hydrogen itself, because it can store the most at the lowest cost. The pursuit of "maximum efficiency" isn't actually possible without secretly wasting a lot of energy.

@michaelti @mrblissett It is also possible to refueling a H₂ car at home. But realistically it is not a major selling point. If H2 stations are as common as gasoline/petrol stations, there won't be much demand for it.

H₂ cars basically remove the large traction battery entirely. It allows for cost to drop to ICE car levels. That's not really something BEVs can match. People are not understanding what disruptive innovation looks like, and why you cannot just improve existing idea infinitely.

@michaelti @mrblissett Toyota eventually made diesel cars in Europe. They are not ideologically opposed to anything. But history has shown that they are rarely wrong. Diesel ended up being a dead-end. This is shaping up to be a repeat of that, with most companies investing in a short-term solution like BEVs, but ignored long-term challenges of that decision.

@Pampa @JustinDerrick Only one group is saying that. And it seems to be based on nothing since so little money is actually being spent on blue hydrogen. It is just a projection of future investments that seems to ignore real world investment trends.
