Well referenced article by a thinktank based in #Pakistan summarizing the mechanism for #ClimateChange derived food inflation being observed in the country.
Doesn't add anything new except the fact none of the listed issues are predictions - they are observations and cited.
#ClimateCrisis is here, and as in the Global North, farmers/gardeners can see it clearly, but the rest barely.
Also, to put the 36 thousand tons of CO2 the plant can capture into perspective: The average German person emits ~11 tons CO2 per year. Hence the plant can remove the yearly carbon output of ~3300 German citizens.
So the worlds largest plant will not even be able to compensate the carbon put out by a small German town…
If you like bullies, let us introduce you to @exxonmobil.
"Exxon Mobil’s punitive lawsuit only hints at the lengths that the fossil fuel industry will go to preserve a business model facing an inexorable decline." #climatechange#climate#fossilfuels
"Ocean temperatures are currently hovering around the levels they typically reach in late July — and they’re likely to continue rising as the summer goes on."
Everyone is talking about this NPR story about USDA hardiness zones shifting. It's a great story and the shift is real and it's evidence-based. But a couple things about USDA zones:
It's based only on the minimum winter temperatures and nothing else. For example my new zone is 9a, which is the same as a lot of Georgia. My climate is nothing like Georgia except for this one statistic.
1/2 #gardening #ClimateChange https://apps.npr.org/plant-hardiness-garden-map/?name=Seattle&state=WA&lng=-122.351538&lat=47.619335
USDA hardiness zones part 2:
The average min winter temp is based on the average in the previous period (12 years). So while the average has moved up, temperature volatility is also increasing. Temps jump up and down more. So even though my zone is now 9a, I still need to plant like it's 8b or even 8a because there are still cold snaps down to the same temps. This isn't because the climate isn't warming, it's because the warming is causing more chaos. #gardening#ClimateChange
No, no. Of course I didn't change the churches stance on contraception. I'm just joining in with the Climate Debate to gain popularity. We still want our worshippers actively oppressing women, spreading deadly, sexually-transmitted diseases, and adding to population growth which is a major cause of climate change.
I don't understand how the generation that literally watched CFCs in aerosols wreck our ozone layer (and the rebound it had when those CFCs were banned) can sit back and deny that manmade climate change is real. #climateChange
Ghana’s forests are being wiped out: what’s behind this and why attempts to stop it aren’t working.
In 2022, Ghana lost 18,000 hectares of primary forest, a nearly 70% increase from 2021. It was the biggest increase in forest loss of any country in recent years. #ClimateChange
This is not cheering for the pay workers get at Chinese EV manufacturing companies or the supply chains etc but the fact that North American car companies have made zero moves to make simple, low cost EVs is pathetic. “Flood the market” blah blah blah. There’s no free market anyway just protectionism, government subsidies and the gatekeeping to keep EVs at $50,000 a piece. Say nothing of the #climatechange song and dance about getting folks into EVs #canada#cdnpoli#ev
I guess this is also necessary for the demonization of China by conservatives and the oil and gas sector essential to sell the bit that what #canada does on #climatechange doesn’t matter globally. I’m not cheering for China or their business practices or whatever but the EV market in this country is a fucking joke. My only hope is that perpetual high EV prices force the #publictransit conversation #cdnpoli
"The global average concentration of carbon dioxide in March this year was 4.7 parts per million (or ppm) higher than it it was in March last year, which is a record-breaking increase in CO2 levels over a 12-month period".
A couple weeks ago I followed along as volunteers from the disaster relief organization Team Rubicon removed burnable material from Zintel Canyon in Kennewick, Washington, as part of an effort to mitigate wildfires in the area. Kennewick has a higher fire risk than 92% of U.S. communities. Team Rubicon was started by a US Marine Corps veteran in 2010, traveling to Haiti after that year's devastating earthquake and has grown to include more than 160,000 volunteers helping respond to or mitigate disasters both in the US and internationally. Photographed for Crosscut/CascadePBS ( @cascadepbs ).
Thanks to Genna for taking the pitch and to Mai for her reporting on the piece, published this week on the Cascade PBS website.
(took a little break from posting over the past few weeks, but hopefully I'll get back into the regular swing of things)
@YorksBylines@anuckols When viewing such impacts of #climatechange I am convinced we can't reduce CO2 fast enough. Therefore I wrote a blog on how we should start a path toward stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) yesterday.
SAI can cool the earth in 2 years and keep temperature steady even if CO2 keeps rising.
Please read the blog before you disagree
And sorry, its very long and thorough
