My yard smells like pine trees- then I drive down the hill and go smell the ocean. I’m in olfactory heaven. I need to bake some brownies so I can have all my fave smells in one day.

I spent an hour talking to birds this evening. I’d imitate their calls and they’d respond. I might be engaged to a Sparrow, though.

Any elders out there know how to do normal activities and or be exhausted by late afternoon? Also, naps don’t work on me- I can’t fall asleep. Should I resort to contacting Walter White for some of his product?

my husband has taken to trimming the edge of the lawn with scissors and I don't even know who he is anymore. WTF?

How much alone time vs socializing do you need?

For me there are a few people who are usually equalizing, and I can just be around them, so I won't count that. But generally, I find about 3 times a week, I'm game for socializing. A day in between to rest is usually nice, but the larger the gathering or if we go somewhere particularly noisy or I'm meeting new people that involves more effort, and my social battery empties sooner. I'm very curious where everyone else falls on this!

OldAndCranky,
@OldAndCranky@sfba.social avatar

@RickiTarr the older I get the less I enjoy socializing. My husband and I hang out- see the occasional relatives in the area- we don't have friends here in our new locale- I suppose we should make some. People visited us from afar last summer, I assume they will this summer as well. I have to throw a party later this summer and it will take me months to recover. I was a very social person for many years. I'm over it. People tire me out.

“The most regretful people on earth are those who felt the call to creative work, who felt their own creative power restive and uprising, and gave to it neither power nor time.”
― Mary Oliver Ugh- that one hits me hard.

Good morning humans and other beings. It's sunny here. I had better run outside before it changes.

anyone else have constant self criticism in their head and how the fuck do you make it go away?

OldAndCranky,
@OldAndCranky@sfba.social avatar

@tantramar I think I agree with it all, though.

OldAndCranky,
@OldAndCranky@sfba.social avatar

@tantramar Because it's annoying and frequently kind of paralyzing. I used to tell my clients that depression lies- while secretly believing it all myself. Fuck brains.

@OldAndCranky@sfba.social avatar

@tantramar Yeah. It's amazing any of us function at all!

OldAndCranky,
@OldAndCranky@sfba.social avatar

@tantramar indeed. We just sort of stumble around. But we make music and art, so we have got that going for us.

My younger daughter is now 35. I have middle aged children. How can this be when I am a mere youth myself? A mere child, I tell you. A lass. A youngster. A spring chicken. BTW, my dog just came downstairs with his nightly sock to bury in the couch cushions. I thought you should all know this.

Does anyone else out there in the vast void (hi, void!) have trouble understanding animated content? I can't even deal with Lower Decks and I am a Trekkie. There's something about the cartoon image that makes my brain go kerblooey. I try to appreciate Miyazkaki, and films like the Spiderverse, things and my brain just checks out and starts thinking of other things. I can handle graphic novels, though. There's something about the...I want to say...lighting of animation or something. That make sense to anyone? I haz brain cooties.

OldAndCranky,
@OldAndCranky@sfba.social avatar

@mloxton I find the images hard to understand. I have a difficult time following the action. Also it kind of gives me a headache sort of?

Sometimes I think Plato was right about philosopher kings. The whole problem with this anyone can grow up to be president thing, is that anyone can grow up to be president. People are idiots.

I'm taking after my dad in that my hair hasn't yet really gone grey. His didn't until he was nearly 80. I guess I should be glad but I think if it was grey I'd get some damned respect. Me and Rodney Dangerfield, man.

I finally finished Poor Things and, wouldn't you know, it grew on me. Or maybe it was just Emma Stone's amazing acting that finally reached me. There were some funny moments, some great cinematography (particularly when she and Max were walking down the lane and it showed each with the background leaves and tree kaleidoscope blurry), and even some touching moments.

@jda @movies That was a film I was sure I would hate, but it won me over. Emma Stone is amazing and the way Mark Ruffalo just threw himself about - he killed me. I swear he looked like he was about to break character and crack himself up. I

OldAndCranky,
@OldAndCranky@sfba.social avatar

@jda @movies Yes, indeed. I really had some issues with the sexual politics of the whole thing (she was a child!) but everyone seemed to be having such a good time, and there were so many funny bits, and...the performances were brilliant. It's also was so wacky to look at- over the top, but I gave in and enjoyed. Also the music in that dance sequence was wild! Loved it.

I've been thinking about music all day, which is not unusual. This led me to read the wikipedia entry on jazz- which is excellent. Jazz. There is nothing better than jazz. Nothing.

OldAndCranky,
@OldAndCranky@sfba.social avatar

When we visited New Orleans I stood at the plaque in Congo Square, largely considered the birthplace of jazz, and wept. It felt like a sacred place to me. That place where African slaves and European horn players (seriously!) made music together and created jazz. America is, in many ways, a terrible place that cannot deal with its cultural legacy- but then you get jazz- the ultimate clash of cultures exploded in music! It's crazy! It's unlikely! It's pure magic. I think jazz is the best thing America contributed to the world. We're a ridiculous mess of a nation but we make great music.
