just realized i've had the mollywhite.net domain for over 10 years(!!)

related sneak peek into an upcoming piece: i firmly believe that if you're going to spend money on one thing online it should be a domain, particularly as online identity gets more fragmented. as platforms come and go, you can always find me there.

These AI SEO spam operations have used lists of common searches to ensure that their pages come up first in searches in the “long fat tail” the kind of search where it used to be about 50/50 if you’d find a page addressing your needs. But, it used to be if you found something like “The top 15 smallest ants in the world” it wouldn’t be nonsense. It’d either exist and be the work of another person who cared OR you found nothing. Not so now! I can’t possibly over-stress how bad this is! 1/

The funny results: like the ones telling you to cook with glue hide the fact that some portion of these attempts at impersonating information are not easy to detect. For every obviously bad result there are others going unnoticed since they were plausible enough to pass.

And those flawed results are being regurgitated and reprocessed by further AIs spreading the rot and half truths deeper and deeper into the body of human knowledge. Like scratching an infected wound.

Hey, Mastodon … I’m trying to track down an #AppleNewton developer named Stephen A. Cronin.

He worked at #AMD and operated a software company called TapTech based out of Austin, Texas in the late 90s. I’ve managed to contact his former software partner, Francis Preve … but Francis lost touch with Stephen years ago.

Together they released a sequencer program for #NewtonOS called NR404 and I’m hoping the source code still exists somewhere.

Boosts appreciated.

A heartbreaking moment that was saved by an SS photographer at Auschwitz II-Birkenau during the deportations of Hungarian Jews. It was taken 80 years ago, most likely in late May 1944. A little child finds a dandelion in the grass and is handing it or showing it to an older boy.

So, some of you may remember that on May 14th I posted that I had found a postcard sent by H.G. Wells to his wife and that I'd sent scans to the H.G. Wells Society to see if it could be evaluated. I heard back last night. The expert wishes to remain anonymous, but has given permission for the details of the evaluation to be shared. Below are the scans that I sent of the front and back of the card. The card shows a train at the top of the Brünig Pass in Switzerland... 1/11

🧵 A small positive of Elon Musk buying Twitter is that he's made it impossible for Donald Trump's Truth Social to succeed.

Traffic at TS has been declining for months despite Trump flooding the site with posts about his high-profile NY criminal trial.

There simply aren't that many far-right political junkies out there. The few that do exist are running amok on Twitter. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/24/truth-social-traffic-trump-media-djt-data.html

The business prospects of Trump Social aren't good. But it's getting a chance because it's being propped up by MAGA investors.

This should have happened with Air America, the progressive radio network that was cancelled after barely existing. There are many other instances of this, sadly.

The left must do better at supporting its own content creators. /end

This is such a Tory policy. People who can’t vote will be forced to do something that older people have fond memories of, even though they never had to do it themselves. Meanwhile, Labour is considering giving sixteen and seventeen year olds the vote. And they wonder why young people don’t vote Conservative. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/may/25/sunak-promises-to-bring-back-national-service-for-18-year-olds

I think the is the kind of thing that has to happen to a social system like the Internet to force you to be engaged, more self-sufficient, and not reliant upon the largesse of government subsidies and vampiric commercial entities.

We have to drive it to keep it.
