Carbon Dioxide Removal

I’m not anti-CO₂ removal (). I want CDR to work, and that’s why I push for decarbonization. Unless the world decarbonizes significantly (down to 10 to 15% of current emissions), CDR will be essentially useless.

There is a striking difference between land- and ocean-based .

Ocean CDR ideas like adding or artificial upwelling imply unprecedented intervention into ocean commons, with unknown impacts on ecosystems. , not to mention regulating, would be practicably challenging, because ocean waters move.

Land carbon cycle is already managed by agriculture, urbanization etc. Land CDR would be a mean of already ongoing carbon rebalancing.

I am sad that I could not detect a post from @davidho and @schizanon for 6 days! I think kbin is not ready for prime time - I will focus my efforts on Lemmy at my CDR community https://slrpnk.net/c/cdr which may possibly also be known as !cdr or @cdr

The past and ongoing emissions of CO2 are absolutely unjust, among their various other detractions. The tendency to continue business-as-usual is at odds with everything that we must now do. When I first became involved in environmentalism, the slogan was "think globally, act locally" and I have never ceased in that. There is injustice, and it will not end. But I will focus my efforts toward bring about the changes I want to see. Those changes prominently include achieving net-zero CO2 emission in my life (I could have another 30 years or so if I am lucky). It would be great if that happens because every coal mine, oil well, and natural gas well in the world were to be capped. But I suspect that is a bad gamble. As a hedge, and an optimistic effort to turn the balance toward actual NEGATIVE emission - I, having a low influence on the machinations of oil companies, try to understand the options for undoing some of what we've done - in ways that increase some of the social justice we have lost.

Thank you for stopping by this microblog. Please join me at the CDR community on slrpnk.net

My fear is that instead of spending money on CO₂ removal (), future people will spend it on adaptation and leave the most vulnerable to suffer, like we do now.

These are people who have profited the least from CO₂ emissions and paid the highest price.

schizanon,

@davidho we should subsidize recaptured hydrocarbon fuel to incentivize development of technology the way we subsidize corn for

I’m confused by people who say planting trees for CO₂ removal () takes too much space and then advocate for bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) as a tech solution. Where is all that biomass being produced? 🧐

I talked about CO₂ removal () with Sea Change Radio.

There are four marine CO₂ removal (#CDR) companies (2 OAE, 1 DOR, and 1 kelp) that are among the 20 finalists in the $100 million XPRIZE carbon removal competition.

This is a new /kbin magazine for discussing CDR. I am a member of openaircollective.cc - a volunteer working on CDR issues, so this is a way to meet people with that common interest.

Monitoring, reporting, and verification () refers to the multistep process to quantify the amount of CO₂ removed by a CO₂ removal () activity.

Here, we make recommendations for MRV for Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement () research, arguing that it has an obligation for comprehensiveness, reproducibility, and transparency, as it may become the foundation for assessing large-scale deployment.

Both observations and numerical simulations will be needed for MRV.

I said some things to @casey_crownhart regarding the latest Global Carbon Budget from the Global Carbon Project.

We need to phase out ASAP and develop CO₂ removal () so they could be deployed in a few decades.

While much has been made of the technical and economic potential of CDR, little consideration has been given to the feasibility of such schemes.

The lead author says various social, cultural, environmental and institutional factors have been glaringly overlooked by those championing .

Land-based is controversial for many reasons: not least because countries and companies can use it to justify delayed emissions' reductions."

I talked to Todd Woody from Bloomberg about Banyu Carbon, a marine CO₂ removal (#CDR) company that is working on using photoacids for direct ocean removal (DOR).

It seems promising, but the challenges of DOR include the ecological impacts of sucking in so much seawater, making sure removed carbon is permanently sequestered, and MRV.

If we ONLY need 1 Gt of CO₂ removal (#CDR) in 2050 as opposed to 10 Gt, does it make R&D on CDR less urgent?

Rich countries sent climate funding to the developing world with interest rates or strings attached that benefited the lending nations.

What makes us think CO₂ removal () will be any different? Why would rich countries spend trillions of dollars to benefit the developing world?
