juergen_hubert, (edited ) Strange lights can sometimes be spotted in the German countryside at night.
Some of them are friendly, and some of them are... not.
EDIT: Whoops, wrong image!

juergen_hubert, A long time ago, a particularly nasty ghost was banished to a forest to the west of Weißenhorn.
These days, the forest has been partially converted into an industrial park.

LizardSF, @juergen_hubert @germany @folklore OK, I mean, I wrote one of those myself. :) But in this case, both sides kept their bargain, neither cheated the other, though, obviously, the dwarf was under duress and so the contract would generally be unenforceable under modern law. I have no idea how such things were handled at the time.
monovoce, @germany @LizardSF @folklore @juergen_hubert I have to admit that I did expect the super-plow to cut off the farmers legs at some point. Can’t say I would have blamed the dwarf if that had happened.
juergen_hubert,
tauli, @hackbarth @juergen_hubert @germany @folklore
The source references the German word "Tonne" which, considering the context, probably means barrel. As in the container, that holds the beer.

And here in Wales. See the story of Devil's Bridge near Aberystwyth:
https://devilsbridgefalls.co.uk/the-legend/
It seems he gave up on Wales after that...
jonberger, @juergen_hubert @Henrysbridge @germany @folklore There's a Canadian folk tale about some voyageurs who made a deal with the Devil to bring them home for Christmas, but they had to promise not to drink, or they'd forfeit their souls. Of course they drank, being voyageurs and all, so the Devil got their souls. But then their local priest persuaded him to participate in a step-dancing contest, with the voyageurs' souls as the prize. The Devil's obvious response would have been "why in the world would I do that when I already HAVE their souls?," but no, he went for it out of vanity, and of course he lost the contest, happy ending hurray. This story was the basis of a Christmas Revels show a few years back, in which my wife played the Devil.
