vhstape, to technology in Stack Overflow and OpenAI Partner
@vhstape@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

What annoys me about companies like StackOverflow, Reddit, Twitter, etc. partnering with AI firms is that they do not actually create any of the content on their platforms. Sure, if you read the terms they technically own the data, but still…

MysticKetchup,

That’s basically what most tech companies are trying to optimize these days, the ability to make money off of other people’s work. It’s why they’re so hyped about trying to use AI to replace the very workers it’s trained on.

WhatAmLemmy,

Most of modern civilization wasn’t built by the current S&P500 — most of them didn’t exist 50 years ago, let alone 100 — it was built by humanity, collectively, over thousands of years.

That fact won’t stop any individual or corporation from trying to claim absolute dominion over the entire human population, all derivative works and resources, or the rest of our descendants futures, for all eternity.

sudo42,

The goal of every thief is to take something of value from someone else without any repercussions for themselves.

stevestevesteve,

Just more nonsense showing how broken modern copyright is. It’s too hard to write weasely legalese to just say you have the right to reproduce content submitted to your website, you have to own it entirely. And if you own it, why not sell it?

PseudorandomNoise,
@PseudorandomNoise@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not difficult at all, these companies just have no reason to do it that way. They force you to agree to their terms before you can use the website at all, which means they’re in a much better position to make demands. We can’t counter with anything, it’s just “agree that we own this copy of your content”.

And most of us agree to it because we have no way of knowing that someday our content might actually be worth something.

bungalowtill,

I don’t think it’s broken. I’m pretty sure it’s working as intended. In the early days of the colonisation of the web capitalists made it already pretty clear how property laws will be applied there.

Aceticon, to microblogmemes in So this is how democracy dies ...

It’s only because American Democracy is dead and burried that there are no other choices than these two geriatics.

Healthy and trully Democratic systems naturally respond to a situation such as this by having more choices.

freamon,

… which many countries don’t have, because ‘First Past the Post’ systems naturally lead to only 2 viable choices.

They’ll also be an election coming up soon in the UK - I can choose between ‘Sensible Conservative’ or the currently ruling ‘Lunatic Conservative’, but anything else would be a wasted vote.

Fedizen,

Republican alaska instituted a four candidate IRV system. Its bonkers that people aren’t talking about reforming the US presidential election system to something similar. Not to mention a national initiative system. I know these would require constitutional amendments but it doesn’t require an amendment to talk about it.

Aceticon,

Oh yeah, I lived in the UK for over a decade, right after having lived in The Netherlands (who have Proportional Vote) for almost a decade, and am well aware of just how horribly rigged the British voting and political system are, especially after Brexit (which I saw first hand, after which I did my own personal Leave of a country I, frankly, see no positive future for)

My own country, Portugal, has it’s own rigged system that gives nice 15% boosts to representativeness versus actual votes received, for the 2 major parties, though fortunatly it’s not just one seat per electoral circle, so whilst nowhere as Democratic as PV at least there are 8 parties with parliamentary representation, small parties still get half the parliamentarians that their votes would’ve yielded under PV (unlike in the UK where the Green Party gets 1 million votes in 40 million - so 2.5% of votes - and ends up with 1 seat in 600 - so about 0.15% of seats), and even with the rigging the upcoming elections (next month) do not seem on track to yield a parliamentary majority for any one party.

archomrade,

Somewhere between -‘anything else is a wasted vote’ and ‘leftists who refuse to vote for the lesser of two evils are enabling fascism’ - is political leverage to push for better policy.

dangblingus,

That leverage doesn’t exist when the majority of Americans have an IQ under 95.

Yeah its funny how youre expected to outright lie to coworkers

NightAuthor,

You can totally drop a “meh”, “could be better”, etc. they’re maybe a bit obligated to ask for more details… or just be one of those people that straight up drop your whole emotional load on em.

I used to do this to a few old coworkers that would always work the idle chitchat circuit around the office until they learned to just wave or ignore my cubicle area altogether.

Worked great.

I absolutely hate small talk.

I’ve pissed more than one person off by responding with “Are you actually interested, or is it just a pleasantry?” and when they look awkwardly around and more or less say “just a pleasantry”, I respond with “The don’t ask questions unless you want an answer.” and left it at that.

9 times out of 10 my day is shit. Just tell me what you want and get out of my way. Small talk is for people who have properly functioning brains.

Fortunately this is not the case in every culture ʘ‿ʘ

Confidant6198, to comics in The exchange.

I never understood why people just randomly ask “how are you?” if they don’t really care. By that point is just better not to talk.

kevincox,
@kevincox@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s a greeting. It is meaningless other than a polite gesture. Just like when people say “Good morning” they aren’t really wishing that person a good morning, just saying something friendly.

Plus the response is naturally escalated based on how well you know the other person. The first time you walk into a shop it is “How are you?” “Good, you?” “Good thanks” But if you have been getting your morning coffee there every day for a year maybe you do actually share something a bit personal. Probably starting off with a positive “Great, I found $5 on the street this morning” and eventually becoming personal and maybe even saying something like “Not great actually, …”.

So it is actually a nice way to transition into a more intimate conversation as you get to know someone.

Ferk, (edited )
@Ferk@lemmy.ml avatar

The thing is that we do have “Morning!”, “Hello”, “Hey”, “Yo!”, “Hi!”… and many other greetings that are not in the form of a question that actually leaves it open for the other person to respond with honesty and that is often also used as a conversation starter. If you really aren’t open to a conversation, use one of the shorter friendly greetings.

If I say “how’s it going?” and they answer with something I don’t have time to hear… at most I would excuse myself and politelly say that I don’t have too much time to talk… but complaining about the other person actually answering truthfully makes no sense.

Of course it’s just a comic, but still… I don’t think the one answering is in the wrong here.

chumbalumber,

In the UK at least, ‘you alright?’, shortened to ‘right?’ is just used as a greeting. In the same way that ‘how are you doing’ got shortened to ‘howdy’. It’s just another form of greeting or pleasantry.

If you’re actually interested how someone is, you’ll ask without the contraction (‘are you alright?’), and with a different intonation.

I think that’s a fairly reasonable way of doing conversation; I don’t have a problem with it.

boogetyboo,
@boogetyboo@aussie.zone avatar

Yeah, Australia it’s ‘howyagoin’.

My Scandinavian friend said it was difficult when he came here because he would start to respond but the person had already walked past.

It’s something you say when you first arrive at a meeting, or greeting someone. You also say it to strangers when you walk past each other with your dogs.

The response if you’re staying to chat with someone you know is ‘good, how’re you?’ and they say ‘good’ and that’s about it - you either move on, or start an actual conversation.

but in passing with strangers or colleagues in the corridor, it’s also ‘howyagoin’, smile maybe a nod and you keep moving.

BruceLee,

Glad to ear it. I’m a bit tired and bored but I’m mostly fine as well.
How is the weather where you are?

lugal,

It’s very good, thanks! I’ve been for a long walk today but Monday it will get worse, sadly

BruceLee,

I can imagine. Today was walk for me as well and I am in no rush to be monday.
