I’m noticing them more at my house in a small city this Summer more than I have previously. We went camping in the woods over the weekend and I saw a ton of them out there. I was on shrooms but my friends that weren’t confirmed they were flashing like crazy.
Headlines like these feel so effing crazy. What a business trip be in, trying to stop the people who keep the air and water clean from making the air and water cleaner. Boggles the mind.
Unlike CO2, where cumulative emissions are what matter, methane breaks down within a few years, so what matters is the rate of release. I’ve been relatively unconcerned about methane hydrates because converting those into gas lowers their temperature, slowing the process and limiting the rate at which it can proceed.
It sure is going to be fun when he have people offering radical, new solutions that are going to be poo-pooed by the same crowd who were against the vaccine because, “iT’s ToO FaST, aNd tHErE’S nO WaY tHeY Did EnOuGh ReSEaRcH oN ThIs!”
I’d be very interested in a tiny turbine that gives off 500W per hour to cover the basic power consumption of the house when there is no sun shining. But most stuff I see is junk, and the other stuff is way too powerful for what I need.
Installing a turbine on a house is technically problematic (a mast is simpler to deal with), it is hard to maintain there and can convey noise into the house.
The advise about having a few acres of flat land as a minimum - it is sensible, unless other options beside wind cannot be chosen.
The other good option would be community ownership of a larger turbine. This would get you the lower cost per kwh and better availability that those have
I use my HP printer infrequently enough that every time I booted up my inkjet, I had to put it through a printer head cleaning cycle. I’d be surprised if I got more than 20 sheets of paper for each cartridge do to the wasted ink, and the dang thing malfunctioned frequently even after cleaning (streaks, blots, complaining about missing colors when printing b/w, etc).
After switching to a Brother mono laser, I haven’t had to do any maintenance in 3 years and it’s still on the original toner cart which it came with.
Also using a Brother laserjet, it’s lasted ten times longer than any inkjet I’ve ever had, and still going strong. Although I rarely need to print, it hasn’t failed me yet when I do need it.
I’ve got a Canon Pixima 5000 series. My family tends to print a good percentage in color (because thankfully I don’t have to print many documents in this day and age). It uses individual color cartridges (C, M, Y, K and a second large K), so if one goes out you just replace that color. I generally pick up the off brand refills on Amazon for fairly cheap. Last time I got a 5 pack of sets for $20. It’s lasted us 2 years at this point. The ink carts are literally JUST ink and a foam block. No electronics or drm like HP. Highly recommend.
I bought a cheap Canon inkjet and have started refilling it with cheap off-brand ink. It’s not particularly as good as the original ink, but for my purposes it works great.
