/ Ben-Gvir: “lethal force should be used against women and children approaching the fence”

During a cabinet meeting, far-right Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir clashed with Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi over rules of engagement along the border. Ben-Gvir argued that clear directives were needed to prevent another attack, saying lethal force should be used against women and children approaching the fence as potential militants.

The heated exchange reflects tensions between the military and the new right-wing government over policies toward Palestinians, with hawkish ministers pushing for tougher measures and clearly illegal measures, despite warnings from security officials and the international community.

@oatmeal @israel @palestine As Israel hounds Palestinians out of the West Bank (“Lebensraum”) and seeks to exterminate them in Gaza (“not our religion you know“), you’d think they might have learned something from their own Holocaust. And what happened to the chief perpetrators once arraigned.

@ferryoons the Israeli right was very effective in taking all this lessons and weaponize them for their own ideological end …. If they claim Hamas are the new Nazis then “never again”, lesson learned, doesn’t sound so absurd, etc…

[cont’d] Supreme Court rejected petition against the appointment of Ben Gvir as Minister of National Security.

Justice Amit criticized Ben Gvir's past and current conduct, but emphasized that the minister declared before and the Court that he has changed his ways, and that Netanyahu has the authority to make decisions based on political considerations.

"The Prime Minister has the authority to consider also political, coalition, and party considerations, within the framework of his decision to appoint a person to the role of minister in his government. The complexity of life in general and political life in particular presents a wide range of possible appointments, including those that clash with the purpose of integrity and public confidence that is required. Therefore, there is room - and even a necessity - to exercise discretion. But this will be done with care, and intervention will be in exceptional cases."

@oatmeal @israel @palestine Is this from this year? I seem to recall several thousand Palestinians being shot by snipers from across the border back in 2018.

@jhavok @oatmeal @israel @palestine

And what happened in the two weeks before Oct 7th when Israel allowed such "protests" to get near the border? It turned out that those protests were used to sabotage the border fence (plant bombs and such).

@jhavok @tzafrir @oatmeal @israel @palestine there's video evidence and reports by the border watch units. We've known this morning months. They piled explosives near the wall weeks ahead of the attack because they know there are no patrols on that side of the wall.

jhavok,
@jhavok@mastodon.social avatar

@ia42 @tzafrir @oatmeal @israel @palestine So...for two weeks before an attack that the IDF had been warned about, they quit patrolling and allowed explosives to be piled along the wall. That's interesting...

bifouba,
@bifouba@kolektiva.social avatar

@oatmeal @israel @palestine Lethal force has been used against women and children approaching the fence ever since it was set up. If there were ever any formal rules of engagement that said otherwise, they were never worth the paper they were written on.

bifouba,
@bifouba@kolektiva.social avatar

@oatmeal @israel @palestine Just one example all the way back from twenty years ago. The Israeli response was, literally, sure, killing that child for approaching the fence was against the rules, but so what…

@bifouba note the exception of war time activities. Not a legal expert but I guess there’s some fine line the courts can still walk if they want… guess it depends on proportionality etc. Ben-Gvir says fuck all that. But Ben-Gvir is a Khaneist, not a legal scholar. He had a portrait of the mass killer Baruch Goldstein, another Jewish American supremacist, hanging on his wall at home.

@MaxG It is bad enough what the Israelis are doing. No need to compare to nazi's, they were far worse. @oatmeal @israel @palestine

33reg,

@rik @MaxG @oatmeal @israel @palestine not trolling, but genuine question- by what metric were they far worse, if you compare them at equivalent stages: that is, when the Nazis had massacred ~50k, were they much worse than the Israelis? By the metric of efficiency of massacre, I would posture the Israelis are worse. With racist rhetoric, the Israelis are worse and have a more pervasive ability to disseminate said rhetoric.

rik,
@rik@todon.nl avatar

@33reg Ever heard about Babi Yar or Auschwitz? For sure Israel is committing war crimes and killing civilians indiscriminately, but not on industrial scale the nazi's did. @MaxG @oatmeal @israel @palestine

33reg,

@rik @33reg @MaxG @oatmeal @israel @palestine well, sure, but if you are comparing 6 million to ~50k that makes sense. However, if you compare the rate of killing, aushwitz ~120-180 kids dead per day. Numbers are difficult to know accurately. Israel is wiping out 120-150 per day. Seems fairly comparable to me.

rik,

Seirdy,

@argumento @rik @33reg @MaxG @oatmeal @israel @palestine They did. Nazism distinguishes itself from other fascist and ethnonationalist ideologies by incorporating antisemitism, Social Darwinism, etc. as core tenets. None of the forms of Zionism I’m aware of do this. Is there a form of Zionism that I’m not aware of?

You can condemn Israel’s actions and be anti-Zionist without resorting to this.

33reg,

@rik @33reg @MaxG @oatmeal @israel @palestine sure, but as noted, rhetoric is not so easy to quantify. That being said, kill rate seems a fairly reliable indicator to identify a monster. See also, any genocide, Hiroshima etc. The case for it not being a reliable metric is often made by ones that are not killed, the other side of the coin see it as fairly important.

argumento,
@argumento@hispagatos.space avatar
