Listened to a woman one CBC saving money on groceries by buying across the border. They then turned to an economist who pointed out that one of the reasons for less expensive food was wages were lower. Of course he failed to take into account the costs of health care.

gypsy,

@Dianora the thing that annoys me the most is that some journos don't bother with context or fact checking. I saw someone from Kelowna say to the reporter that she saw a 14.5 lb turkey for $100. The interviewer didn't ask if it was cooked, delivered and served. Where do these people shop and why would you broadcast this to the entire country. Shoddy journalism.

@gypsy Excellent point. However, it is also possible the journalist in question is actually doing disinformation.
Those that own the media control the propaganda.

gypsy,

@Dianora and that's another excellent point. If it is intentional, it's toxic and dangerous. We're heading down a very slippery path where general public will dismiss legitimate news because of diminishing trust in the media.

@gypsy I have been making a study of Propaganda, PR, disinformation etc. for the past few years. It is very worrisome. I am hopeful that the distributed Fediverse model can help but it's going to be a hard sell. (Read Lippmann and Ellul for depressing takes on this)

gypsy,

@Dianora this sums up the state of media for me accurately. Credit to @twisteddoodles

JustinDerrick,

@Dianora There are a dozen reasons why groceries are expensive in Canada, and minimum wage earned by grocery store employees isn’t one of them. Off the top of my head:

Transportation costs (specifically distance)

Fuel taxes to help pay for road infrastructure

Lower population = fewer economies of scale

Import fees on foreign products

Higher margins

Astronomical executive salaries

Shareholder distributions

Higher input costs for locally produced produce

@JustinDerrick A lot of those sound like speaking lines from the grocery executives. I am not sure that all of those are true.

Highways flow right into major cities like Toronto on Montreal which are pretty close to the US. That extra distance when food come from the US or Mexico should be moot.

Import fees should be minimal after the free trade agreement of the 80s and then NAFTA.

Greed and lack of competition are big things you didn't state although your points touch on them.

I find if greed is an option in most things, greed is a big part of why things are expensive.

@human3500 @JustinDerrick
I would not be surprised to see some collusion uncovered.

human3500,
@human3500@ottawa.place avatar

@Dianora Is that just because of the bread price fixing scandal which the government just shrugged about? Are you thinking that that emboldened them?

Or are you thinking it was because of who they spiked prices like crazy and blamed inflation while paying executives bonuses and running healthy profits?
