What should I do about a violation? I have an and the company does not provide the source code for the

Please boost/reblog this to get more people involved.

hirad,

@farooqkz unfortunately there's almost nothing a user can do about it. And fsf can't afford going after these companies.
You can try to raise awareness, but they just wouldn't care.

@hirad

How is that relevant to ? Torvalds is the copyright holder so it is he should go after these.

If you mean making the company aware, I am highly confident they already know this.

hirad,

@farooqkz Torvalds is only the copyright holder of the name Linux. The code is licensed under GPL, and he is no different than any other contributor of the kernel. I said fsf because it's usually them filing lawsuits, and trying to ensure GPL is respected.
I'm talking about raising awareness among the community to put pressure on the company. But if they cared, they wouldn't violate the GPL in the first place.

hirad,

@farooqkz violating GPL is nothing new. Mediatek is constantly violating it and refusing or delaying the release of the kernel source code all the time. But going after them costs a lot of money and time, which nobody has in the community.
The best you can do is to avoid buying products from such companies.

@hirad

I get it now. But Torvalds is also one of major copyright holders of the Linux kernel source code among other contributors.

It turns out https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-violation.html links to https://sfconservancy.org/copyleft-compliance/ for GPL violation in many FOSS programs including Linux.

hirad,

@farooqkz Yes he is. And yes, legally he can sue them, just like others can. But he is just not gonna cuz he doesn't have the resources.
FSF does (thanks to that charity), but their resource is still limited. So they just don't go after every company that violates it.
Unfortunately its an unfair battle between rich companies and the movement.

I just reported to the URL I mentioned above. The thing is that, I want an Android epaper tablet and this company is the only one producing them and has well support.
