gretchen,

I wrote about the summer of 1988, when a dramatic heat wave almost woke America up to global warming.

From an editorial in the Burlington Free Press:
"In the summer of ’88, it is possible to feel the walls of the future closing in. The heat has been endless and stifling, but harder to bear is the little zing of fear that future summers will be worse. ... Next year, we can shrug, and adapt. Find cleaner beaches, or give up swimming in the lake; invest in air-conditioning; accustom ourselves to more expensive food. But this summer unhappily recalls the greeting-card cliche, ‘Today is the first day of the rest of your life.’ Is the summer of ’88 what the future holds?”

Thirty-five years later and the words still ring true.
