I wrote about the summer of 1988, when a dramatic heat wave almost woke America up to global warming.

From an editorial in the Burlington Free Press:
"In the summer of ’88, it is possible to feel the walls of the future closing in. The heat has been endless and stifling, but harder to bear is the little zing of fear that future summers will be worse. ... Next year, we can shrug, and adapt. Find cleaner beaches, or give up swimming in the lake; invest in air-conditioning; accustom ourselves to more expensive food. But this summer unhappily recalls the greeting-card cliche, ‘Today is the first day of the rest of your life.’ Is the summer of ’88 what the future holds?”

Thirty-five years later and the words still ring true.

My latest is about this cruel summer, SpaceX and sequoias ... with a little bit of thrown in for fun.

Stories of climate disasters come like waves lapping on the shore, each one a little closer, telling us that things are getting worse, and worse, and worse. We hear the stories as news, but we don’t recognize them for what they are — warnings.

Behind this encroaching tide of climate updates is a tsunami whose devastation we are not prepared for.

Billy is 38 now. Maybe if his parents had taken his concern seriously back in 1992 we wouldn't be in this situation today.

I wrote something about all of the broken weather records and the broken promises from world leaders. It's hot out there, and the most trustworthy person is the meteorologist.

The "new normal" doesn't mean we should become resigned to floods and extremed heat. The new normal means we need to act like we're in a climate emergency every single day.

I just learned the term "moral disengagement" --- it explains why/how we continue to do things that we know are harmful (e.g. frequent flying).

gretchen,

"These cognitive processes allow to deactivate moral self-regulation without deteriorating self-image and tend to inhibit pro-environmental behaviour ... Holiday and tourism flying seems to constitute a separate, liminal space, where some everyday norms are often suspended, including climate concern."

gretchen,

@frigginglorious Yeah ... I don't fly much at all, but I still find excuses when I feel like I "need" to.
