continuing to think a lot about denial, and how strong it is, in myself. Like, irrationally some part in me still hopes that it will suddenly go away; that all of this - climate crisis, Gaza, redundancies - will turn out to have been a nightmare, not true. In those moments i have to relearn and reaccept it all again. Which I do. But i have more and more understanding of how strong the instinct for denial really is. https://mastodon.green/@pvonhellermannn/112471933954570931

I don't remember the last time the USPS website didn't have a weather-delay alert at the top. I wonder at which point they simply say "climate change will impact delivery for the foreseeable future".

Dear friends,

The best carbon capture and storage system are healthy . I don't know if the photo here of this Youhiogheny River section pictures is, in fact, a healthy ecosystem, but it is a lovely view and there is lots of carbon loveliness in those trees and in the forest floor. I took it for my friend who wanted a photo to look at while he pees. It's titled:

Oh this is awful to read. I kept on posting about here on last year and worrying about homeless people in particular, and to reassure that 645 really did die, and 290 of those were homeless- that is just awful!

The is starting to bloom. These used to cover our septic tank, before Nestle made us connect to a sewer system instead. It's no longer moist enough for a huge mass of them, but some individual plants still hang on.

(And we still boycott Arrowhead water for stealing our local water supply to sell in plastic bottles at grocery stores in SoCal - it tasted much better running through our pipes).

Eventually we'll run out of places to colonize.

But perhaps not before the climate crisis spins out of control.

The flood happened in 2007, but the instinct to shift the blame is ever present.

The Papua New Guinea national disaster centre on Friday’s landslide in a remote village in the northern part of the country:

“The landslide buried more than 2,000 people alive and caused major destruction to buildings, food gardens and caused major impact on the economic lifeline of the country,”

The mentioning of “food gardens” shows their centrality to people’s livelihoods. These people contributed nothing yet are now destroyed by climate change.

If anyone here is near in the next few weeks: do come and see the Emma Stibbon “melting ice rising tide” exhibition at the Towner Gallery, which rather brilliantly connects her polar art with new work on the changing Sussex coast line.

After the exhibition we went to seafront itself; tried to take pictures of beautiful cliff gardens - see last year’s! On ! - but will need to come back in morning with better light. Still, beautiful as always but yes, crumbling…

Thinking about impermanence, all the more at the moment because if i lose my job we might have to move. I have moved so much in my life and used to not mind, but I really love Eastbourne and really don’t want to move; I wonder whether that’s also because of an overall sense of uncertainty and insecurity. Or maybe i am just getting older and all change seems bad..

My attempt at Tim Garrett’s model in bullet point form:

  • everything in life is pushing energy along networks
  • all networks are built of matter
  • having built a network, there is a corresponding energy demand to keep that network functional
  • but networks are always in the process of decay so they always need maintenance and renewal
  • too little and it decays, too much and there is a window for growth and for power laws to do their thing
  • and here we are

#climateDiary #decroissance

urlyman,
@urlyman@mastodon.social avatar

…a corollary to this is that just like every other creature, we exploit gradients and are subject to the same power laws.

We’ve just been more ingenious at harnessing combustion and doing everything at scale.

The more energy we find a way to harness, the bigger our economy grows. This makes it likely that renewables will be additive. Which has been the pattern of our energy history

During a typical day my attention turns over various aspects of humans and the climate crisis. At least once a day, some days it might be half a day, the thoughts come and go along with a generally persistent climate anxiety. Often times the thoughts are replays of variations of questions about why humans are failing to act to preserve their future. Today as I walked my dog Cosmo I considered the different approaches we could be taking...

Kidney disease is high and rapidly worsening in coastal Bangladesh due to rising sea levels increasing water salinity as well as extreme heat. For many, like 65yo Khatun, dialysis is too expensive.

The whole of Khulna, once a thriving city, is affected by saline intrusion due to frequent floods, cyclones and tidal surge.

“The global climate crisis is essentially a water crisis,” says Dr Mohammad Shamsudduha at UCL.
