Planning some sewing projects to replace disposable plastic bags for these final uses:

  • electronics
  • med/hygiene
  • portioned calories
  • sets of portioned calories
  • cold soak bag
  • pack liner

I already have systems of bags I reuse so sizes are easy to spec. I’ll mostly use Dyneema remnants. It’s air/water tight(ish) and see thru. I’ll seam seal and add zippers to some and roll tops to others.

@jds I bought some silicon bags to replace my plastic bag use and have good luck with them. They are quite robust, but have a weight penalty when compared to thin plastic bags

@cvvhrn yeah I’ve looked into those, but want to experiment with some sewn sacks first. I should consider them for the van regardless though.

@jds @cvvhrn Let me know what works for you. Bags are super simple to sew if you have access to a machine. My favorite (although heavy) was the interior of old Starbucks Travelers, but they switched out of using the foil lined/multi-layer plastic travelers to a recyclable plastic in the last three years. Waterproof, tough... though definitely still remain a smellable (coffee is forever).

@ai6yr @cvvhrn yeah I sew up ditty bags and stuff sacks all the time, I figured it was time to replace the rest of my use cases that involve disposable plastic.

@jds @ai6yr @cvvhrn I guess it's getting to be time to overhaul my mom's old Singer. Do you use drawstrings for closure?

@bosquebill @jds @cvvhrn I tried clips and also just a piece of paracord duct taped to the bag and used to tie it off after spinning it shut. Probably a more elegant solution, LOL. Photos in a second...

@ai6yr @bosquebill @cvvhrn I’m not a fan of draw cord stuff sacks since you end up with all this loose cord all over the place. I usually do roll top with clips or snaps. A couple of these will have zippers though and I have a new design in mind for the portioned calorie sacks using roll top + mini Velcro.

@jds @bosquebill @cvvhrn These are a little overstuffed. Paracord version is ocean-proof, but the duct tape eventually falls off.

@jds @ai6yr Thats a great move as those bags will wear out, but cloth ones will last for quite some time

@cvvhrn @jds Yeah. I need to make that move for some items for sure. My worst use of disposable plastic bags is definitely for hiking/backpacking. And dog poop.
