Facebook gave Netflix all of your private messages in exchange for all your watch history.

rocks.

@mcfly piracy validated once again

@mcfly it's not shocking, it is 100% expected.

@mcfly

And somehow their ad targetting and recommendations still suck.

mcfly,
@mcfly@milliways.social avatar

@skjeggtroll This is a thing that i find amazing. All the data and their recomendations is STILL THAT SHIT.
A lot of that does not need data. I bought a vacuum cleaner. Vacuum cleaner ads for a month.

jeff,

@mcfly why is that shocking that is literally their business model?

mcfly,
@mcfly@milliways.social avatar

@jeff I don't think that's allowed in europe.

Or is the data exchange limited to the US?

@mcfly @leyrer Sounds less scary when you take into account that access to the API endpoint doesn't give you access to the inbox, it only allows you to get permission from users to access their messages. Only after a user agrees you can read/send messages on behalf of the user.

@luca That's interesting and different to what i read elsewhere.

I took the differences as "different API consumers get different endpoints" but maybe i am wrong.

Do you happen to have a link?

@mcfly The only 'shocking' part of this is that anyone is shocked about it. At this point, finding out that facebook/meta is doing shady shit with your private data is like finding out that Hitler wasn't a good person.

mcfly,
@mcfly@milliways.social avatar

@splatt9990 I think i would be interested if they still do it - in the EU.

I'd be shocked to find out they are.

@mcfly ew, gross. I ditched Facebook years ago, but good to know Netflix is giving them my watching habits!

"But we should totally let Meta into the fediverse, and it's super mean if anyone doesn't want to federate with Threads."

DasTausW,
@DasTausW@mastodon.social avatar

@HunkThunderzone @mcfly So they might see the private messages you write to Threads users. Everything else you post is public anyway…
While Meta is REALLY a bad company, I still see its participation on the Fediverse as a good thing.

@DasTausW @HunkThunderzone The common company handbook is that certain type of actions will be only possible on the platform itself and therefore trying to get you back into their walled garden.
