I just tried to use #LibreOffice #Draw to draw some arrows and boxes onto JPEG images for emphasizing stuff.

The UX is really bad for somebody not working with Draw all the time.

Whatever I do, instead of drawing onto the image, the image gets selected instead.

Could not find any layer-sidebar.

Could not scale text without starting the "Character ..." menu, modifying font size blindly + confirming just to see its effect and then start all over.

Dear #FOSS, we really should do better.

After failing so hard with LibreOffice, I'm now trying to accomplish the same task with .

Finished within 15 minutes after finding out how layers, Bezier courves and text is working.

Inkscape is an amazing piece of software!

I've used it for so many things, on Linux even with automation, referring to external images that change based on a script, which then exports the result from Inkscape, without running the GUI.

@folfdk Yes, Inkscape is a great tool. However, for adding arrows to a JPEG image, I'd assume that I don't need a vector-based tool but rather a pixel-oriented tool such as GIMP or Draw.

GIMP doesn't have easy to find tools for adding polygons and manipulating them. So I tried Draw. But then I got stuck and you know the rest already.

2023-11-13 Edit: Draw is not pixel-oriented! It's also vector-oriented just like Inkscape.

@publicvoit @folfdk I use Inkscape for that as well. Insert/Import the pixel graphic put it to the bottom layer. add vectors on top. export to a pixel graphic.

this is how most of the Grazer Linuxtage posters I created were made...

@flowolf @folfdk Good to know. So I'll keep that workflow for similar tasks then.

@publicvoit
is not a pixel-oriented tool, Draw is vector-oriented. The pixel image you loaded with Draw became just one object on the Draw page, hence got selected whenever you clicked on it.

@erAck @folfdk Sorry, Draw is vector-oriented, right.

Inkscape as well. 😉

In any case, I agree with others here that other tools might be more suited for a quick edit. I like ksnip for quick screenshot annotation.

Thanks!

@stragu I had the assumptions that Draw has to be much more mature by now.

@publicvoit edit screenshots and make arrows, boxes and such directly with https://flameshot.org/

Neurotransmitter,

@publicvoit perhaps owner manual used?

@Neurotransmitter I'd agree if we would talk about a special purpose software for professionals.

However, for somebody who just wants to draw some arrows on images with the app I'd recommend for ordinary computer users, I'd say my use-case should work without a particular learning phase.

My learning: I'll not recommend Draw to other people any more without a certain warning attached.
