Man, I hate this mindset. The game in question is DOOM. THE DOOM!

I hate the mindset F2P and stuff has cultivated in people that nothing should ever cost money (then they spend $200 trying to get a special hat)

Oh this is a good time to remind 2 things:

  1. Developers literally would rather you pirate than use key sites. Many many statements have been made, key sites are stolen keys and add to dev headaches, while devs get $0. Just pirate

  2. if you pirated for money reasons but have money now, please go back and support devs whos games you enjoyed by getting the game for real or some merch or whatever.

Got a few games close to that age I'd pay 15 bucks for to get an executable that'd just run. Not to mention how exhausting a lot of the triple A space has gotten due to the F2P model being applied in 70+ dollar games. Funnily enough the industry is making a good argument for paying more for classic games since you can pay 100+ for modern titles and still don't own it.

@SirTapTap Point taken...but Doom is literally freeware at this point. (Allah only knows why this person was trying to get it on Steam, but...)

jonossaseuraava,

@SirTapTap key sites are for companies you absolutely hate.

Just pirate it if you don't want to pay

@SirTapTap@mastodon.social avatar

@jonossaseuraava haha yeah, "pirate our games before using a key site" is genuine sentiment I've heard from many devs. They're usually literally stolen keys from fake reviewers/bundle sites/etc

Personally if I don't want to pay, I just won't play it 🤷 it's 2023 there's too many legitimately free games to play something from a company I don't want to pay money to

jonossaseuraava,

@SirTapTap completely agreed.

I have vague memory of reading from somewhere that the key site keys are often bought with stolen credit cards and then resold on the site. Then the original place gets hit with a charge back and loses real tangible money. The original place being the devs in case of indes.

Or something like that.

I'm completely OK buying keys off dark grey market for Microsoft products. Fuckers probably have more money than my home country's budget

@jonossaseuraava Yep!

And MS keys are a bit different. Those are pretty much exclusively bulk licenses. They're basically totally legit except the seller is breaking their TOS with Microsoft. Real key, real money exchanged on all parties. They're just not supposed to be reselling, no charge backs or direct theft.

I've seen people bail on 100% Orange Juice, I game I have like 600 hours on steam because it "costs money"

the amount of money? $6. $1.75 on sale (and it's like always on sale)

what the fuck people

The only thing I don't like about paying for "old games" digitally is nothing physical.

Imagine how much a fucking steal it'd be to get Earthbound for $5, even if it was a reproduction cart brand new not a collectors item.

(as a collector, I hate collectors items. I don't want "only 100 ever made!!!" I want yoshi's island)
