Why are you not seeing as many posts from Lemmy communities on Kbin?

Hello! You may have noticed that the majority of posts and threads in your feed on Kbin are from within the platform itself. This is because the admin has activated Cloudflare DDoS protection which basically slows down requests to kbin, to prevent the website from experiencing downtime or becoming slow to respond.

Before implementing this measure, Kbin would often show 500 errors and be sluggish in its performance.
The admin (ernest), has been working on finding solutions.

So hopefully, everything should go back to how it was before, and you will see a lot more posts from the communities you have subscribed to with a bunch of comments from other places.

In my opinion, this also created an interesting situation where you can really see how active kbin is even when the discovery of posts from outside the platform is not functioning as intended.

Rest assured, this is only temporary, and in the meantime, take the opportunity to create and grow communities from within kbin itself!

Would it be possible to have other kbin/Lemmy instances circumvent the cloudflare protection while still having it active for users? Like, maybe whitelisting the IPs of other instances? It should not be that much work since those IPs should be static, but completely losing federation everytime DDos protection is fired up seems bad

scevola44 avatar

My guess would be that it’s something that can be done, but more in the future. As of right now, I think that would only “move” the problem and any spike in traffic from other instances would still cause crashes.
This is a guess from my technical knowledge though.

treyd,

I wonder if it would ever be possible to have some kind of federation backchannel where inter-instance messaging goes through some permissioned gateway that could be manually set up to bypass normal auth checks.

Joker,

There are various things that could be done, but it would largely come down to which CloudFlare subscription tier kbin is on and the manageability of all of it. The way it’s set up now looks like a quick fix to address a serious problem. It would take some more thought and planning for a more ideal setup and it may require a more expensive CloudFlare plan. The cheaper plans only allow a few rules and some features are locked. This will almost certainly be cleared up soon.

Yes it can be disabled for specific requests, referrers, or IPs, but there might be a better idea to differentiate, and hail instances. Maybe via a super cookie?

I just came over here and totally new to this. The transition is a bit confusing for me.. Can someone help explain why when I click on a community I subscribed to here that is on Lemmy it says:

The magazine from the federated server may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

Is this normal behavior for things that aren't on kbin social?

lixus98, (edited )
lixus98 avatar

Yes, it is normal. Basically, when you search for a community on Kbin for the first time (a community that was recently created, that no one else has searched for), it gets "saved" on kbin.
However, it won't show you any posts that were made before kbin discovered that community. It will only display posts from that moment and onwards.
The message is telling you that the community may not have all the previous posts, and if you want to see them, you need to visit the community's specific page or instance.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. Makes a lot of sense now :)

Supernova,

Why do I see posts from magazines that I did not subscribe to in my front page? Is there a way to turn that off?

Doom,
Doom avatar

@Supernova You can set the default view as subscribed in your settings, or activate the top bar from the gear icon menu and that will make it easy to switch from all to subscribed

Supernova,

Thanks @Doom that's exactly what I wanted

Kaldo,

Is there a way to customize which magazines get displayed in the top bar or is it always random ones?

Doom,
Doom avatar

@Kaldo

Not sure about that, I'm super new too around here.
There is a featured magazines field in the use profile, but I doubt that's what it does.

If you click the hamburgery type thing the left of your profile link in the top right you can select "Subscribed". By default the homepage is essentially everything.

@lixus98 The cloudflare "issue" would also include messages posted here on kbin but to communities from Lemmy, not showing up on Lemmy, I assume?

lixus98,
lixus98 avatar

It includes pretty much every connection to kbin, including its users. So posts from outside don't show up, post from inside don't reach the outside, etc.

Thought as much.
Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for the update, I've been trying to get a sense of my front page's activity and haven't felt the surge of info I thought I would have with my Lemmy subs involved.

Growing pains. Moving over from the Reddit migration. Looking forward to see kbin grow!

lixus98,

Good thing is kbin.social itself doesn't need to grow much, many federated instances of /kbin and Lemmy might do the trick of having a community similar to that of Reddit.

I love that the gigantic 2000 people greed circus of the other platform is currently being challenged by a single developer who would seemingly never have imagined raising $350.

    Welcome and enjoy!

    pizzadreams,

Thank you for mentioning this. Is this also the reason for the following message when subscribing to instances on other servers?

”The magazine from the federated server may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.”

    Kichae,

On some really basic level, groups on the Fediverse are kind of like Twitter bots that regurgitate everything that is sent to them, sending them out to users to follow them. You're only going to receive posts in your timeline after you've started to follow them.

The hitch here, though, is that for remote groups, your server has to receive the posts in order for you to see them, so that means it becomes aware of content in remote groups only after the first person on it subscribes. So, later subscribers will see a fuller group than earlier subscribers will.

    lixus98,
    lixus98 avatar

Thank you for explaining it!, this is easier to understand

is there any way for the first subscriber to have their view of a lemmy community refreshed? say i'm fairly certain i was the first to subscribe to a lemmy community. i currently only see 4 threads and a "may be incomplete" message. but on that community, i know there are at least 9 current threads. what would it take for me to have my view get refreshed and stay current whenever i check?

    lixus98,
    lixus98 avatar

It depends on when those posts were made, right now it seems like few of maybe none of the posts outside kbin are coming in.
But as I said this should be fixed as soon as the CF protection is disabled.

    Kichae,

Once you subscribe, things come in in real time.

Unless there's something preventing syncing. Which there currently is, in that annoying Cloudflare connection authentication thing that keeps popping up and interrupting sessions.

    lixus98,

    dg,

Will it start showing older posts at some point in the future or is this not able to be implemented?

    skulblaka,
    skulblaka avatar

It's likely possible but impractical. It's a waste of storage space and fetch requests when the posts are easily available at the home source. Remember that many of these instances are being run on people's own servers and VMs, and hardware comes at a premium. Kbin is no different, ernest is hosting this whole platform on his own VM subscription and he's going to have to keep up with costs.

You'll get new posts, because that's the point of subscribing, but if you want to browse old posts you may as well go to their home.

    TheRecycledMoth,

Where might one contribute to those costs? I’m embarrassed I haven’t found like a donate link or anything but I feel like it’s gonna be necessary soon!

Once this problem is solved you should see a lot more activity from other places in the fediverse. Posts that now have 200 upvotes might show 1k or more upvotes for example.
