VanessaBrooks, in KDE with good Samba: is it possible?

Not the most elegant solution but you can always just install nautilus. Nothing is keeping you from using apps from both DEs except a little extra work getting the theme set

jfx,

Yeah, though I presume I’d need to set xdg values so mounted shares through nautilus will show up in programs/interfaces. I’ll look into it, thanks.

Still, in KDE with good Samba: is it possible?
@Still@programming.dev avatar

I’ve not really used samba in dolphin as I find it more reliable to just have systemd handle automounting all filesystems as it allows other programs to access the locations

I’ve not noticed any performance issues using it this way, tho I only use a few shares on my local network

jfx,

Thanks I might try that. Unfortunately I can’t mount everything at boot, because that would take forever with some slow NAS around the network.

Rustmilian, in saving and restoring arbitrary sessions including terminal and GUI --- impossible?
@Rustmilian@lemmy.world avatar

It’s called Compositor Hand-offs, it’s coming in the future and is Wayland only.
It’s likely going to be in Plasma 6 come 2024.
Restoring application state isn’t the only thing it does either. It also allow for graceful crash recovery, true-full-poweroff hibernation and hot swiping supported compositors.

Look into QubesOS

lurch, in saving and restoring arbitrary sessions including terminal and GUI --- impossible?

You can pause VMs from VMware and Virtualbox. If you had a session with xpra or screen inside, you can restore it afterwards.

echo64, in saving and restoring arbitrary sessions including terminal and GUI --- impossible?

What you are basically finding out here is that most gui applications are written expecting only one user to be active and that weird things can/will start happening as a result.

Multi-user Gui was a bit of a momentum 20 years ago, but it’s not really found a real use, so no one bothers making it work well.

However, we have hypervisors and containerized operating systems now, so if you really wanted to do this I would look into setting up an os for a project in a container, if you can get graphical applications going (you can, it’s a hassle but you can) then you’ve a fully self contained system dedicated to that one thing.

chemicalwonka, in Are Epson Ecotank printer/scanners Linux-friendly

I have an Epson L1350 and I installed Epson’s proprietary drivers without any problems on my Debian. I think Epson is much more Linux friendly than HP

cmnybo, in Are Epson Ecotank printer/scanners Linux-friendly

Check if the printer is Mopria or AirPrint certified. If it is, then it doesn’t need any print drivers and will work fine.

deadlock,

Friends and family have several EcoTanks in use. Works great in Linux Mint, immediately detected. Printing and scanning from the network works without any problems so far.

/edit: whoops, should have been a reply to the main post

I have one and it mostly works fine out of the box. It’s been a while since I set it up but I think I used the Linux CUPS driver. I had one time where it printed raw postscript but I haven’t had that happen since.

One of the softwares I really want to love but am too stupid to even get the basics right.

See you next time when I miserably fail to use you, Inkscape.

I remember fondly using I some years ago. Glad to hear it’s still going strong.

isthereanydeal, in Ultrawide on Linux: can you tell a game to take up only the "middle"?

I don’t recomend Ultrawide Displays for gaming on linux. Get it and you,LL SUFFER (spoky voice)… The EDID of my UW display (predator) is horrible … like… uw 1440p or 768p and nothing in between…

Tbh theres have been a couple of years since the last time I tried and people says that gamescope does the trick but I didn’t tried… but believe me that It was a real pain in the passt to avoid res stretching.

Clearwater, in Ultrawide on Linux: can you tell a game to take up only the "middle"?

As the others said, windowed mode at your desired resolution, fullscreen at your desired resolution, or if neither work, gamescope.

Gamescope will make the game believe the display is a particular resolution and force it to run that way regardless of the actual hardware.

Sounds like a job for gamescope.

Doing this in reverse all the time. Stretching games on my triple head setup to full size. It’s the same principle. If the game doesn’t offer it kill it with gamescope, Wine virtual desktop or if nothing helps a completely virtual display that overlays your current:

For some editing the config files directly works wonders. Looking at you Unity!
