There are some things I miss. This one occurred to me as I listen to my playlist.

I miss putting a record on the player, lifting the needle, and gently resting it on the spinning vinyl. For a few seconds, the speakers reflect that familiar crackling sound, then the music begins.

For some reason, I miss that. Digital is great, but the ritual of putting a record on the player and hearing that 'crackle' made the experience more personal and less 'remote'.

@dancinyogi I had a linear tracking turntable most of my adulthood, but the kind where you put the needle down growing up, and I appreciate both. I miss reading the album cover, and the liner notes, sitting on the floor leaning against my bed.

@dancinyogi

it's so very intentional... you have to participate to make it happen... just as you stated.

it's a task so unlike digital...

@dancinyogi Over the past few years, I have moved almost completely back to vinyl. In fact, rediscovered an artist last night and wanted to buy her remastered box set but was disappointed to find it's only available on CD or digitally. That means I'd rarely hear it.

@dancinyogi There was nothing sweeter than the sound of a good record - miss it in music today.

@dancinyogi I love physical media (vinyl, really) but the prices have skyrocketed recently, even for used stuff.

My 50 year old turntable and receiver still spin that clear crisp uncompressed sound. I appreciate that I’m hearing what the artists want me to hear, not squished tracks.

@dancinyogi you’ve hit on on of my most treasured memories in detail. I had only a small case/box turntable with handle and latch to open and lay out on the floor. Perfect for 45’s but awkward for albums. When I was 19 my brother made me 2 giant wood speakers so I could get a better turntable for college. The sound filled my room and bass could vibrate everything. Never had that experience since.

@cobalt Oh, I had the same setup until I got the bigger turntable for albums. And yep, I had the same speakers! Loved that vibrating bass, too.

@dancinyogi I have a nice new turntable and still play vinyl often. I also make extensive use of Apple Music for the convenience.

cataclystp,

@dancinyogi Im only 20 so im wayyyyyy too young to have experienced vinyl, and the only analogue audio i ever experienced was casettes (i used to love jamming my finger inside the spinny hole and spinning the casette heads with my finger and getting the tapes all messed up and needing help from my parents)

BUT I recently picked up an audio technica vinyl player, bought some of my favourite video game soundtracks as well as Royksopp's Profound Mysteries and... wow!!!!! there's something so different about vinyl, even if nowadays its just a digital signal being encoded onto a vinyl platter. I have no idea if i calibrated the needle properly though, and i have no idea if that's a good or bad thing. the manual expects me to understand vinyl lol.

@cataclystp Oh yeah, cassettes! I love that I can find any music I want in less than five minutes and add it to a playlist in seconds. I love the convenience and, in some cases, the digital enhancements. But I do miss the rituals; shopping for a record, spending an hour perusing all the records at Sam Goody, then smelling the vinyl as you removed the record from the cover. THAT I miss.

cataclystp,

@dancinyogi I miss shopping for games by going to a mall and looking through like an impossible amount of dvds. little me loved playing infamous on the mall's demo ps3.

@cataclystp I miss malls!
