Witches and that sort,

  1. Do you commune with the dead?
  2. What techniques do you use?
  3. Are you comfortable with ghosts/spirits being in your house?

So growing up in rural Kentucky with tons of superstition, we were all raised NOT to have ghosts in our houses. Communication when needed is fine, but the living and the dead have their own places.

Nowadays, many people talk about living in haunted houses and feel very comfortable with this.

sarakathleenuk,

@KentuckyConjurer

  1. Regularly
  2. It just happens, but when I want to encourage it I’ll do journaling or meditation
  3. It wouldn’t feel right without them tbh

@KentuckyConjurer
I do;
I have a bastardized series of practices & rituals that uses attachments over ceremony;
we're all haunted, so I'm very ok with living with ghosts.

sorcererpoet,

@KentuckyConjurer 1) not often 2) almost exclusively through dreams 3) I'm not really sensitive enough that I'd notice so i dont generally worry about it, but I keep my wards strong and cleanse regularly

@sorcererpoet

I'm big on warding, too. The whole process of warding and its upkeep is quite comforting to me.

I had a party a few years back and a friend brought someone I didn't know, who didn't know me. She kept going on and on about how she's psychic and how she felt this or that in my house and when I told her no, that doesn't happen here, She tried to berate me in front of my guests. I was like, look, my house isn't haunted. She just wasn't hearing it.

The friend, several years later when they were no longer friends, told me that lady did that at several houses she took her to.

@KentuckyConjurer I don’t purposely commune with the dead. I am a person who grew up in a haunted house and later lived in one for a few months after a house fire while ours was gutted and fixed. Each time, once we tried to explain away with mundane explanations, we were left with supernatural. I thanked the ghost in the rental for sharing space with us, and in my childhood home, just asked they “be nice”. I’m fine with spirits, but I don’t actively invite them.

KentuckyConjurer,
@KentuckyConjurer@witches.live avatar

@MyrddinEmerys

My husband and I had a rental before marriage. This was the 90s and we constantly, my husband especially who is as hard a dirt when it comes to the supernatural, would feel someone sitting on the end of our waterbed.

Years later, he worked with a guy who bought that house, and they disclosed to him a man had taken his life in that room.

I would never "want" that in my house. It felt terrible, not scary.

MyrddinEmerys,
@MyrddinEmerys@ohai.social avatar

@KentuckyConjurer I knew who was haunting my house I grew up in. It was family. The rental we had no idea and the landlord denied it, but I soon realized by the names on junk mail that no one lived there long. I never could find anything that happened there. After I thanked it, things calmed down. Luckily, I’ve never had bad experiences and most of the time I sense more than experience. Sorry you had a bad one.

PNW_Michelle,

@KentuckyConjurer

  1. Yes, I do!
  2. Mostly? I just talk to them and listen. Sometimes, if they are hard to hear, or if I want to connect to a specific spirit, I'll use light trance, and candles never hurt (but also I just like candles). I tend to offer them water, or maybe some flowers, in addition to the flame sometimes. But I'm pretty casual about it.
  3. Yes absolutely. Some of my best friends are dead (not always the human dead, though). I've personally never had a problem with being pestered by the dead, though I've helped a few friends who were having issues.
KentuckyConjurer,

@PNW_Michelle

Do you commune to ask for information or because you feel they need someone to listen? Like they need some interaction or guidance from you?

I know I've mentioned it before, but I think a lot of people have problems setting boundaries and commanding their space. This goes for living and the dead.

PNW_Michelle,

@KentuckyConjurer both. Just depends on the situation. I've been approached by spirits who needed help (usually dead relatives) but have also just gone to them to talk. Personally I find boundaries aren't hard for me because like ... I have a body and they don't? That gives me a lot of options for protecting myself and my space.

KentuckyConjurer,
@KentuckyConjurer@witches.live avatar

@PNW_Michelle

Absolutely. I think commanding your own space is one of the most important lessons anyone should learn, especially a witch.

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@KentuckyConjurer I have never seen or felt a ghost, or had any spooky experiences, despite trying really hard. I realize I'm in the minority here, and that doesn't mean I don't think ghosts exist or something, I think it means I have exceptionally dull senses for this type of thing. So if there were spirits in my house, I wouldn't notice them anyway 🤷‍♂️
I have had a lot of witches tell me that I can somehow hone or exercise these senses, but honestly, I think I was just born without it, like being Blind or something. Oh well, not everyone is good at everything, my talents lie elsewhere.

Mike_from_Before,

@KentuckyConjurer

!) I have.An old boss of mine had been suffering for years with Alzheimers. One night, he appeared in a dream just to socialize. The filling day I went to work expecting the worst. He had not died, but did the next day.

2)Mostly dreams and they come to me. I do, however, meditate with my parents and other ancestors. Some of the experiences are stronger than others.
3) My first experience was a spirit talking to me. Loud and clear as if a person was next to me. I was alone in the house. Another time I came house and I heard girls laughing upstairs. I thought my wife was upstairs with the neighbor. Again, I was alone in the house.

KentuckyConjurer,
@KentuckyConjurer@witches.live avatar

@Cat_LeFey

I think it is definitely easier for some more than others. We all have our natural boudaries we set up, but we also set up boundaries through experience. Example, someone who has been bullied a lot has deeper thicker walls of protection. Those are hard to get through when you don't realize you've built them. I also think some people are super sensitive to every little thing and suppose things are ghosts when they aren't. So it's a hard balance to find.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@Cat_LeFey @KentuckyConjurer FWIW I would wager a lot of people who claim to have had ghost interactions probably have not.

I realize I tend more to the muggle side of things where the paranormal is concerned. But SOOO many times there are perfectly mundane explanations and folks just wanna mystify their lives. Which I get, and is fine, mostly. But... you know?

KentuckyConjurer,
@KentuckyConjurer@witches.live avatar

@MsHearthWitch @Cat_LeFey

I second this.

I've been doing clearings and such for close to twenty years. Can't tell you how many times I've walked into a house or business and you can just feel that it's everybody's crap come home to roost.

But they desperately want to believe it's a ghost or demon.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@KentuckyConjurer @Cat_LeFey

Bad vibes cuz everyone's miserable isn't paranormal! But it's sooo much easier to believe it's a haunting than to do the deep inner and interpersonal work.

Calling in some exorcism team is a lot more appealing than going to therapy & owning up to ur shit.

Now, I fully admit the show was trash TV but there was an ep of Paranormal State where they came to a house. And then basically said, "You need to clean up the physical first, we'll be back." And like... THAT.

KentuckyConjurer,
@KentuckyConjurer@witches.live avatar

@MsHearthWitch @Cat_LeFey

YES!!! I went to a house once with 9 inside cats and no litter boxes. That was the last time I did a home reading that didn't have a paranormal crew go in before me to check it out. Never again!

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@MsHearthWitch My favorite is those ghost hunting shows where the city people go out into the woods and start freaking cuz they "hear noises" like, my dude, that is a squirrel. But I've just heard so many stories from so many people, so I don't discount it entirely.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@Cat_LeFey Yeah, not entirely. I have Doubts™. I also very much lean into the "Unless there is no possible way for this to be explained in the mundane, it's not paranormal." But... I'm old and boring.

SteveHynd,
@SteveHynd@mastodon.scot avatar

@MsHearthWitch @Cat_LeFey There's another thread today that mentions Grounding, and I'd just like to say that your post is what that looks like done right 🙂

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@SteveHynd @Cat_LeFey Oh I'd be interested in reading that thread if you have a link to it?

SteveHynd,
@SteveHynd@mastodon.scot avatar

@MsHearthWitch @Cat_LeFey I just looked, and now I can't find it. Maybe I'm misremembering Kentucky Conjurer's thread on protection and shielding since they're not unrelated subjects (in my view).

Maybe @KentuckyConjurer could start a discussion? It sounds like it should have been one of her threads lol

KentuckyConjurer,
@KentuckyConjurer@witches.live avatar

@SteveHynd @MsHearthWitch @Cat_LeFey

I tagged you two in it.

WoodlandGoth,

@KentuckyConjurer 1) I do not commune with the dead.
2) See above
3) Never had any situation of living with a ghost in a house before. But I think it would depend on whether the ghost is harmless or not. If the former, I'd be down with it. If not, time to find an exorcist.

KentuckyConjurer,
@KentuckyConjurer@witches.live avatar

@WoodlandGoth

Do you think ghosts and spirits use the energy of people?

WoodlandGoth,

@KentuckyConjurer Oh, I somehow missed this question!

I honesty never thought about that. I'm not really sure if they do.
