The river is looking glorious this morning!

It's always a good idea to bring offerings to the local river spirits, as they are usually the most volatile of vaettir. They make good friends for a witch, but are fast foes to those who don't respect them.

@deeraiken Water is always good, as they are collectors of water. This time, I had a really cool rock. I get a feeling that they are magpie-like, and appreciate shiny things.

Hail Freya, it's Friday!
For this week’s I'm reviving an age-old pagan debate.
This is a two-part question:

Do you think cursing/hexing is an acceptable practice?

Have you done it?

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@Writch This is a good story, thanks for sharing, cuz it illustrates an important point that useful cursing isn't about revenge or comeuppance, but as a tool to correct power imbalances.

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@VVitchy Yup, sometimes violence is necessary. I punch Nazis, and I also curse them, lol

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@MsHearthWitch Yes, same. I also consider cursing to be a magickal reprimand in the same way we have social reprimands, which are actually really important to a well-functioning, peaceful society. If someone is acting poorly, it's up to someone else to speak up and say, “hey, we don't act like that, it's not cool!” And so it also might fall on the witch to provide some counterbalance, energetically speaking.

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@Pagan_Animist Hurting someone's dog is definitely grounds for a curse!

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@thesquirrelfish I don't think banishing is as harsh as cursing, because I see it as more protective than hostile, but I get what you're saying here. Whether magick or mundane, it's important to think about all the consequences of our actions and what we're putting energy into.

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@magmora Ooh, good idea, that's subtle, sneaky magick

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@mjausson That's a good way to look at it, like a mirror spell. True justice is getting back what is put out.

Eastern Pheobe nest update: 5 eggs! I expect hatching in the next 3-4 days.

The pair of parents are taking turns incubating the eggs. They love perching in the aspen right outside my window so I've been able to watch them closely.

They do this cute thing after they eat where they like, wipe their beak on the branch? Adorable.

Blue ghost fireflies magical as fuck

@iraantlers @redoak Photos by Brazilian photographer Vitor Schietti. Not fireflies, but artificial lights in an art installation:

@iraantlers @redoak Right? Maybe modern tech has disillusioned us, or maybe we've done it to ourselves by relying on it.
Whenever something like this happens though, I just remind myself that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes) fell for the Cottingly faeries hoax, so nobody's perfect, lol

Annual trip to the greenhouse today, look at these awesome 'galaxy' petunias!

Same as previous, but in dimmer lighting and closer for detail.

It’s morel mushroom season, which means I’ve already had to direct a couple people off my property. I get a few every year.

It’s common advice to look in abandoned apple orchards to hunt for these prized mushrooms. So when hunters show up, I know that they’ve done their research and seen there’s an old orchard on my property. But if they’ve done their research, they also know that this is private property, yet they come out here anyway, which is very poor wild foraging etiquette.

Trips my wards every time. Seriously, don’t go walking around a witch’s woods without permission, like, have you not read any stories?

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@TheCallisandra Yes, I've had that happen too! Oddly, it's usually the kids that actually ask. I tell all of them that I forage every year and I only ever find a couple. As a local, I do know a couple really good spots tho, and I'll tell them if they're nice about it.

My absolute favorite native Michigan wildflower is the trillium. Every year around this time, I go out in the woods to see them. I have to plan it just right because the blooms only open for a couple of days.

Most trillium species are protected in Michigan, and it’s illegal to pick them in the wild because they’re endangered. It’s okay to buy them from ethical plant nurseries, though.

On this Mother's Day, I'd like to talk about raising the bar for fathers. Because the bar is set really low for us, guys.

To be a ‘good’ father, all you have to do is like, not beat your children, maybe take them to a ball game every other weekend, and hold down a job.

But to be a ‘good’ mother? You have to feed your kids healthy food, make sure their hair is cut and they're clean, get them new clothes as they rapidly grow, communicate with the school, bring them to after school activities, volunteer at said activities, make sure their homework is done, help them with personal problems, comfort them when they're upset, keep track of who they're friends with, make friends with the moms of their friends, all while making sure your home looks like no one lives in it. Oh yeah, and go to work, because according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 74% of mothers are also working.

She doesn't want flowers or jewelry, she wants you to pick up some of the crushing mountain of tasks and societal expectations!

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@aehdeschaine Omg yes, it takes so much emotional labor to raise a well-adjusted child, it's just insane to me that literally all of it falls on the woman in het relationships. Like, the straights are not okay.

I'm loving everyone's pictures of the aurora!

A lot of these pictures don't have alt text though, and I get it, it's something that's probably indescribable. But I want to try anyway:

I could say that it's a filmy wash of colors in the sky that starts pink at the top and fades to yellowy-green, but that doesn't capture their majesty. Because the most breathtaking part of the Aurora is how it makes you feel. The bright bands of light that vibrate down like wavering harp strings give a depth of perspective in the atmosphere. The lights are at the top of the sky, and there is so much beyond it, the feeling of smallness is close to fear. The lights aren't constant, they pulse and writhe like living things, like the sky is alive and talking to you through glimmering ribbons. They look like song, like those old gospel choir tunes that give you goosebumps.

Cat_LeFey,
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

@artcollisions Yeah, we had a small break in the clouds, and it was very, very pink. I intentionally didn't add a picture here. Gonna go out again tonight to see if we can see it again.
