It's that time of year again, where my daughter gets a bunch of summer clothes and I have to bust out the sewing machine to tailor every single one. Because, apparently womens clothing isn't made to fit actual women?

MyrddinEmerys,

@Cat_LeFey I have to do that for my two short stacks. No matter how “petit” they are, pants are too long and too big.

So I'm just livid. Yesterday, someone from the DNR contacted me to inquire about our Walk in the Woods for witches & he said, "Cutting down plants and removing them from the woods is illegal." I was like, "What? We aren't doing that."

Now I'm jumping through hoops, sending pamphlets that we're handing out to this guy so he can "approve" our walk in the woods after we've already rented a shelter.

The Tale of Two Gynecologists

This is a bit long, and I've talked about this a lot lately, but it's something I'm thinking about a lot in the wake of so much hatred of female Healthcare. When my female troubles got bad enough that I finally talked to my doctor about it, he referred me to a gynecologist. I had already had several ultrasounds and an MRI at this point, and she had put me on some oral contraceptives for several months, (which made sick to my stomach no matter what I did) and had just done another ultrasound. She greeted me with "Well, you're really messed up inside, Honey.", which already had me pretty stressed out. Then told me I would probably need surgery to figure out exactly what was going on. She then asked me if I wanted children, and I said No. I had taken my husband with me to the appointment for moral support, and she glanced over at him, and then talked to me for 5 minutes about how many women my age could still have children, and I could definitely consider it, and that they would do everything they could to make sure I could stay viable. They could freeze my eggs if I had to do a hysterectomy, just on and on. She probably asked me directly 4-5 if I was sure I didn't want kids. Finally, I said, "Ma'am, my husband got a vasectomy over a decade ago, we are absolutely sure we don't want kids." After hubs had found me crying on the toliet, because my period was late again, he went to his doctor and said, "Hey doctor, I'm thinking about a vasectomy." The doctor gave him a pamphlet to read, and made him an appointment. The whole thing was done in a few weeks.

Anyhow, she finally referred me to a gynecological surgeon, and I was not looking forward to dealing with this again, and was just generally terrified of having surgery for the first time. I met with this woman and she was so efficient and practical. It is the longest doctor appointment I've ever had, since this surgery would be exploratory, she went over every possibility of what could happen when she was inside. She did a thorough exam, she went over all the scans that I had, and explained why she thought this needed done. Then she said she would like to put in a Mirena IUD during surgery. She said, "You're in pain half the month, and there's no reason for you to have a period if you don't want to have kids. You'll have some erratic bleeding for six months, but by a year most women have a very light or no period at all, there's no reason for you to needlessly suffer if you don't end up needing a hysterectomy."

It's interesting to me still, that one doctor was so focused on what my body could do, and another so focused on how I felt. I came out of the first appointment feeling scared and confused, and the second feeling heard and cared for. Feeling valued as a person and not a baby maker made the surgery much easier to go through, and the Mirena has been great btw. Women don't have to needlessly suffer.

MyrddinEmerys,
@MyrddinEmerys@ohai.social avatar

@RickiTarr Reminds me of how many times I had to answer “yes, my husband agrees with my tubal ligation and ablation; three kids is enough for us”. I was about ready to tell him to suck it up and get a vasectomy if I hadn’t wanted the ablation for the extreme periods I had.

The Pagan path is winding, and it's actually encouraged to explore all different flavors and traditions until you find one that's right for you.

How many did you try out before the one you’re on right now?

Many US pagans want to visit Stonehenge or other international pagan monuments, but I'm willing to bet that each state has at least one sacred site that is equivalent- a place where people gather for spiritual experiences, then and now. Whether natural or man-made, they inspire awe, and have the feeling of a space out-of-time.

I want to hear about your local sacred site! No parameters, I just wanna hear about special places around the US. It would be cool to collect one from every state.

@Cat_LeFey In Michigan is Sleeping Bear Dunes that was supposed to have been created by the great spirit to honor a mother bear who had been trying to save her cubs, but they drowned. It’s still considered sacred by Bative Americans.

I don't like to waste a lot of time exercising so I started doing pushups at work when I'm in remote parts of the factory.
Trouble is my shoulders are starting to hurt again. I stopped once before to let them heal. I've checked and my technique seems correct. Any ideas? Should I work through the pain? Or just give up before I mess myself up? This is not my area of expertise.

MyrddinEmerys,
@MyrddinEmerys@ohai.social avatar

@Malleus Since you say factory, have you done a lot of repetitive hands above shoulders type of work? Have you noticed range of motion problems? Or is it more stiffness. I would suggest visiting a doc because depending on how it feels, it could be anything from a torn rotator cuff to osteoarthritis. While I’m not a doc or nurse, I am a medical professional who worked mainly in orthopedics and since it sounds chronic, checking it out would be best. Until then, rest.

Feel better soon.

If you want to know what my week has been like, I went through the drive thru for a drink and pulled up to the speaker and said,

"Thank you for calling ________ Machine. This is Crystal. How may I help you."

The young person in the drive thru didn't say anything (probably thinking I was a rude person and answered the phone while placing my order).

So I said, "Hello?"

And they said, " Hello?"

Me, realizing what I'd done said, "I'll take a black coffee with a side of sanity, please."

@KentuckyConjurer When I was working full time, schooling full time, and was externing all at the same time and at different places, I sometimes had no idea where I was and answered the phones saying the wrong place. Luckily, at my actual job, the clients knew what was going on and would just say, “Busy week, huh?”

    Witches and that sort,

    We have our huge autumn equinox celebration tonight with a dessert potluck. We have monthly full moon and new moon celebrations, generally with a witchy craft or spellwork.

    We also hold the following celebrations:

    Winter Solstice
    Spring Equinox
    May Day
    Summer Solstice
    First Harvest
    Autumn Equinox
    Samhain

    Occasionally we will hold something for the other cross quarter day but most of us hole up between Jan-March.

    Personally, I've never held full/new moon rituals.

    Are there any occasions you celebrate regularly?

    MyrddinEmerys,
    @MyrddinEmerys@ohai.social avatar

    @KentuckyConjurer I celebrate all the traditional wheel of the year. Mostly quietly, but Samhain I get to be more loud since it falls on Halloween, so no one questions me having a fire in the pit that day. And since so much of Yule decorations are incorporated in cmas, I bring it all out.

    Witches and that sort,

    1. If you have a partner, is your partner accepting/supportive of your craft?
    2. If you do NOT have a partner and are looking, how important is that for you?
    3. If you have children, do you share your craft with them?

    Art by Margot Tomes from the book, Teeny Tiny Witches by Jan Wahl (my fav childhood book)

    MyrddinEmerys,

    @KentuckyConjurer Have partner and he doesn’t know I’m a witch, but knows I’m spiritual. I’m not sure if he’d be supportive. I have three daughters and all three know. They are mostly supportive, but dont necessarily believe in it. I had decided long ago that my girls were going to be able to decide on religion on their own and not be forced into one like I was.

    Witches and that sort,

    1. Do you commune with the dead?
    2. What techniques do you use?
    3. Are you comfortable with ghosts/spirits being in your house?

    So growing up in rural Kentucky with tons of superstition, we were all raised NOT to have ghosts in our houses. Communication when needed is fine, but the living and the dead have their own places.

    Nowadays, many people talk about living in haunted houses and feel very comfortable with this.

    MyrddinEmerys,
    @MyrddinEmerys@ohai.social avatar

    @KentuckyConjurer I don’t purposely commune with the dead. I am a person who grew up in a haunted house and later lived in one for a few months after a house fire while ours was gutted and fixed. Each time, once we tried to explain away with mundane explanations, we were left with supernatural. I thanked the ghost in the rental for sharing space with us, and in my childhood home, just asked they “be nice”. I’m fine with spirits, but I don’t actively invite them.

    MyrddinEmerys,
    @MyrddinEmerys@ohai.social avatar

    @KentuckyConjurer I knew who was haunting my house I grew up in. It was family. The rental we had no idea and the landlord denied it, but I soon realized by the names on junk mail that no one lived there long. I never could find anything that happened there. After I thanked it, things calmed down. Luckily, I’ve never had bad experiences and most of the time I sense more than experience. Sorry you had a bad one.

    Witches and that sort,

    1. Do you create a circle every time you do spellwork and/or ritual?
    2. Do you feel it is necessary before work for protection, or do you do it because it helps get you in the right space energetically (mood)?

    MyrddinEmerys,
    @MyrddinEmerys@ohai.social avatar

    @KentuckyConjurer If it’s a big spell, I’ll cast a circle. If it’s just something little, I don’t. I get into the mindset of spell work by centering more than circle casting.

I do light some candles to honor my ancestors and there are a couple of prayer like chants I do. If it’s nice and there isn’t school/work the next day, we do a fire in the fierpit. If we can’t, I light a bunch of candles and quietly sit in the dark. I will sometimes make soul cakes.
