Linux surpasses the Mac among Steam gamers

It's not the year of Linux on desktop; it's the year of Linux on a handheld.

@arstechnica I'll take it

abel,

@arstechnica I love Linux but it’s kinda « wrong » or missleading headline. 😅

It’s easy to beat Apple or any company in any sector, if this company isn’t really on the sector, imho.

Linux is indeed better than Apple in the console market. 😁

ronaldopace,

@arstechnica Android thinking right now: Am I a joke to you?

etschneider,

@arstechnica et pour ceux qui lisent la langue de Molière, je leur suggère de lire le très bon numéro de Canard PC Hardware de l'été qui explique comment Valve a réussi cet exploit. (Spoiler alert: et d'autres ont beaucoup aidé)

jga,

@arstechnica @siracusa The SteamDeck is an amazing product. Pulled off perfectly. Valve have done an amazing job and deserve all the credit and plaudits.

Without a doubt one of the best gadget I have bought in a long time.

@arstechnica Ultimately it was the Steam Deck that got me into Linux desktop in the first place. All that tinkering to get games working taught me a lot

original_peterm,

@arstechnica The year of Linux on the desktop is 5 years away. Always was, always will be.
Also, the Mac is not a hand-held.

Given that Linux is the kernel of Android, I think we hit that milestone whatever year more Android handhelds were sold than iThings ; )

Poisoned kinux is not linux. Android is a monkey, riding zombie linux in a red nose.
MacOs is a monkey, riding zombie linux, in a turtle neck.

Linux is a kernel. What ships with Android, with minor modifications for hardware support, is Linux. It confuses matters that the desktop OS most people refer to as "Linux" is actually GNU with Linux as the kernel. It's a shame people haven't adopted the disambiguation tactic of talking about GNU/Linux and Android/Linux.

Yes. exactly as described, except my k in linux. fat fingered.

Or just avoided them, like a plague.

Hikiru,

@arstechnica this is great and all but at the same time mac users have like 10 games to play

@arstechnica I have been playing Dave the Diver, which has both a native M1 version and Steam Deck support. It runs better on the Steam Deck; it crashed today on the M1 while I was half an hour into a dive.

derelict_arch,

@arstechnica Linux has been playing the long sleeper game.

@arstechnica The decade of the Linux handheld started when Android became popular a decade ago.

BlueMan479,

@arstechnica I guess this is as good a time as any to admit that I was wrong about the Steam Deck. When it was announced, I thought it would be too niche and largely redundant, and be discontinued at around the 1 year mark.

But I'm happy to be wrong! While it's not perfect, it's a very solid product, and it's nice to see some real competition in the handheld gaming market. Nice job, Valve.

djnst,

@arstechnica thanks to Valve, I'm using a steam deck as my "daily driver" desktop. I powered off my old MacOS machine 6 months ago. I need never buy another video card!! Ever!

@arstechnica while this is exciting news and a testament to Linux, Proton, Steam Deck, etc., I hope macOS doesn’t stay that way… I really hope the new Game Porting Toolkit results in more developers publishing on Mac.

… and/or supporting Vulkan or letting devs use their D3DMetal translation layer 🙃.

    @mentallyalex @arstechnica that’s awesome! There are some PC games I want to play, but I’m just not interested in “more”hours at a desk. Being able to chill on the couch in the evenings with a handheld sounds perfect.

    Tertle950,

    @arstechnica People use Steam on Macs!?

    komikymi,

    @arstechnica i tried my coworker's steamdeck and it was too big for comfort for my girlhands 🥲

  • BalooUriza,

    @nf3xn Especially when corporate desktops are now a specialty niche themselves. Also apparently computers like most televisions ("smart" or not, usually only a WiFi adapter's difference at the hardware level) made in the last decade, phones, routers, set top boxes, possibly other appliances... Most households have at least twice as many Linux devices as Windows.

    @arstechnica macos, not "the mac". there is a difference between hardware and operating system. would you write "freebsd is surpassing the pc"? get it right.

    wilco,

    @arstechnica this is me until my Framework 16 arrives

    wilco,

    @arstechnica Steam Deck and Framework 16" pre-order, and I'm just never buying another laptop lol this is gonna be a good year.

    okneretsen,

    @arstechnica steam deck is great

    RassilonianLegate,

    @arstechnica
    My favorite computer that I own (at least until I get the framework 16") the SteamDeck is honestly amazing

    WagesOf,

    @arstechnica waiting impatiently for the last few pieces from chimeraos so I can have steamos on my ally.
