It is time for my favorite annual Seattle tradition: When I’m forced to get a hotel room for 3 nights b/c my luxury apartment building was built without AC and I will die otherwise.

DickyBows,

@film_girl OK. What am I missing? It looks like it's 32C there. It gets that hot here in the UK every year and even the hotels here don't have AC. 32 doesn't sound so bad you have to flee your home....

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@DickyBows if indoors, your temperature is at least 34C and you face west so it gets warmer in the afternoon (and your tall windows act as a green room) and you’re far north enough that the sun is out for 14 hours and you’re not used to these temps for prolonged periods of time, yes, it’s bad enough to flee your home.

@DickyBows oh, and we have the risk of smoke from wild fires to contend with too. This year it isn’t bad but in past years that has presented a major problem b/c then you can’t even open windows. Also, many of our windows don’t open well.

@film_girl that should be criminal. (And sounds like it would be today, but should’ve been then.)

@film_girl feels like YT is watching since this came up in my feed https://youtu.be/dgpGsszbF4E (seemed different with the dual hose) but probably just recency bias from seeing your posts, lol.

@film_girl Looking at the temperatures you have I don’t blame you 😬

josephholsten,

@film_girl Up in Skagit, we used to make due with open windows, my partner & I lived in Oklahoma without AC for a summer so we thought we knew how to manage.

But then we had the unbreathable smoke a few summers ago, and even if we didn’t value our own lungs, we won’t do that to our kids.

Getting minisplits installed during the pandemic and its supply chain was exciting. Literally 18 months from installer contact to project completion.

@film_girl I didn’t think there was a luxury apartment anywhere in the US without air conditioning, but I’m obviously wrong. Lived in Switzerland 5 years, air conditioning only in work & hotel buildings so do know what that’s like. When you live in an area not prone to heat & it suddenly arrives, as happened to us in Switzerland, it can be difficult.

@film_girl What year was it built?

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@techphotoguy 2016. So they should have known better.

techphotoguy,
@techphotoguy@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl Good grief. That's ridiculous.

@film_girl @techphotoguy maybe the data…

    @film_girl we’re lucky. Our house doesn’t have AC but it was designed to not need it. Most windows face north. Just enough west windows to allow breeze off the water in and cool us down. As long as we strategically close windows and blinds late morning we stay comfortable.

    @film_girl the 1% ! 🤣

    In reality, I sympathize. Three years ago I installed AC here in Santa Cruz. A ridiculous, but increasingly common, update.

    fsantiago,

    @film_girl ewwww, I could never (go w/o ac)

    @victor yes. Just easier to book a hotel than suffer. And rates are only going to increase.

    @waynedixon@mastodon.social avatar

    @film_girl you mean “luxury”, right? When was the building built?

    film_girl,
    @film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

    @waynedixon 2016. They should have known better. It’s obscene.

    waynedixon,
    @waynedixon@mastodon.social avatar

    @film_girl damn, yes they should’ve known, even if it was just split units and not central. Definitely a failure on the builders part.

    film_girl,
    @film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

    @waynedixon massive.

    waynedixon,
    @waynedixon@mastodon.social avatar

    @film_girl I’m sorry you have to deal with having no A/C at any point when you need it.

    film_girl,
    @film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

    @waynedixon we have portable units but it just isn’t enough. This city finally smarted up and is requiring AC in all new buildings.

    waynedixon,
    @waynedixon@mastodon.social avatar

    @film_girl I don’t doubt that portable units aren’t enough. I take it you don’t/can’t have window units? I know that it’s not the same as central A/C.

    film_girl,
    @film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

    @waynedixon yeah we can’t. We have to use the stupid portable ones. It’s just a shitty situation from a builder who should have known better

    brandontyler,

    @film_girl have you considered a portable AC unit? We have one that works great (but our apt is pretty small).

    film_girl,
    @film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

    @brandontyler we have two. It doesn’t work. Our unit is on the top floor. We have tons of windows in our 14 and 16 foot ceilings and we face west. We even installed an AC thing in the living room with a special vent for the sliding glass door to the balcony. It isn’t enough.

    brandontyler,

    @film_girl omg that sucks. A lot of people in our building crack their apt doors open because the main hallway & public spaces have AC. You’d think these luxury apartments would get proper AC installed considering that the new properties (their soon-to-be competition) being built seem to have them.

    wajdi,

    @film_girl Redefining staycations.
