I was thinking today that Musk buying X/T shows why billionaires should not exist. Too much $$$ - not enough common sense.

@mike I just use private lists there that I made before the great enxhittification. They don't have ads and I know what I'm looking at. Not following recommendations or searching, no algorithm. It still seems useful that way. I wonder if he is just not aware of this use case yet. Or im missing something. But it's still free and seems non-toxic.

It's easy to edit the 'hosts' file on your computer to block Twitter or any site you find annoying, intrusive, or that slows your system. I've blocked Twirrer on mine. @mike This will be true when we get more general-purpose providers, like news organizations, weather services, and journalists on here.

But a quick search of #HurricaneHilary on Mastodon<dot>online reveals a lot of discussion about its impending arrival and very little actual news.

Filtering out trolls and false rumors is important, yes.

The ability to sort by # of follower, likes, and boosts instead of by chronology is actually vital for events where ppl interested >> people w/ info.

There needs to be an instance just for journalists that has everyone vetted as working for a news agency. It would make it easier to follow big events on #Mastodon. Maybe there is one and I'm unaware of it?

Saying that there needs to be something means someone has to make the commitment to set up and manage a server. This requires money and time.

Who would determine who are permitted to join and how would they check?

@mike I still feel slightly disorientated on here though. For example I was scrolling through posts and much of it wasn't from people I'm following and not stuff I wanted to see. Then realised I was on the Federated tab. I thought you see posts from people or hashtags you follow on this tab but it appears not - is that right?

@mike but mastodon doesn’t have QT and it’s not familiar and it’s really hard to figure out and I’ll lose my followers which means I can’t do my job of being an elite national reporter who you depend on for breaking news and weather updates and all the most current tech breakthroughs (not mastodon though, it’s confusing).
