Matrix, that one libre software nerds can't use.

Also I don’t need Matrix clients to work, I know they won’t, servers are an even worse story. XMPP on the other hand works.

So xmpp://#room#matrix.org@matrix.org is how I cope.

@lanodan I'm just waiting for Matrix support in ejabberd...

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

@a1ba And then Matrix client support in PleromaFE or Movim? :D

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

@a1ba Or maybe it'll work like a bridge, that would be cool and maybe make me move from prosody to ejabberd.

tusooa,

@lanodan @a1ba please don't, i really don't want my secure instant messaging app in a Web browser.

    @feld @a1ba I wish it wouldn't be real though.

    @a1ba@suya.place avatar

    @lanodan @feld it wouldn't make any sense because Matrix has no clients.

    SuperDicq,

    @lanodan Why can't we? Just avoid the Element client because it uses Electron.

    lanodan,
    @lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

    @SuperDicq No third-party client actually works.

    kainoa,

    @lanodan @SuperDicq ...what? Cinny and Fractal work great on desktop.

    lanodan,
    @lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

    @SuperDicq In fact, Element itself also breaks, which is why I know third-party clients simply do not work.

    selfisekai,

    @lanodan @SuperDicq fluffychat seems to work fine on android, but pretty bad on desktop (not so adapted to mouse, no encryption without secret service daemon, and distro packaging of flutter does not exist and I can tell many reasons for this one)

    tusooa,

    @selfisekai @lanodan @SuperDicq fluffychat has serious privacy vulnerability regarding its Stories, and voip never works.

    selfisekai,

    @tusooa @SuperDicq @lanodan I simply don't expect working voip in matrix at all in the first place. I don't use matrix because of software quality, but despite

    SuperDicq,

    @selfisekai @tusooa @lanodan Really all matrix clients suck in some way tbh. Might be fixed in the future tho.

    selfisekai,

    @SuperDicq @lanodan @tusooa that's what I thought in 2019, but only the android client has improved. in the meantime I had to make a bodge that workarounds the media storage being absolutely broken on my synapse, and realized I have absolutely no tools to fight harassment that regularly happens to my public room with whooping 21 users on it

    SuperDicq,

    @selfisekai @lanodan @tusooa I guess maybe it's fair too say that the Matrix protocol is maybe too complicated to be decently implemented then.

    @lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

    @selfisekai @tusooa @SuperDicq Which is funny because that's the one thing that differentiated matrix from the rest when it appeared in 2014.

    And now we're mostly using Meet Jitsi which is XMPP-ish.

    SuperDicq,

    @lanodan @selfisekai @tusooa Jitsi literally uses XMPP for its text chat afaik

    lanodan,
    @lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

    @SuperDicq @tusooa @selfisekai Yeah, only reason Meet Jitsi is XMPP-ish is the VoIP part that IIRC isn't standard.

    SuperDicq,

    @lanodan I'm using nheko and fluffychat and both work?

    lanodan,
    @lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

    @SuperDicq nheko has got to be the software with the worst user experience I've used in recent years: Messages are silently dropped, fails to sync channels, pain to get encryption working.

    emilis,

    @SuperDicq @lanodan nheko's db file was 32G for me for some reason (this isnt an issue for anyone else that I've seen I just found it funny)
