The one Mastodon feature I would like to see, more than the next 3 or 4 put together, would be: Don’t show me stuff I’ve already seen!

Or at least do it less. If something is getting boosted a lot, maybe a maximum of once a day tell me that it got 38 more boosts, including 11 of my follows. Even better, show it just once only.

Thank you.

@timbray Have you tried @phanpy? It will probably help you with this.

sccook,

@atomicpoet @timbray @phanpy Thank you for recommending . Tried it, liking it so far. USP for me is that it has a menu item that lists the hashtags that I follow.

@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@atomicpoet @phanpy

Wow, my initial impression is excellent! Start at: phanpy.social

Includes everything I want, excludes lots of junk that I don’t. Easy on the eyes. I’m sure there will be flies in the ointment eventually, but seriously considering adopting this as my everyday web client.

sammie,

@timbray @atomicpoet @phanpy Oh this is nice! Loving the grouped boosts.

ryan,

@timbray @atomicpoet @phanpy wow, thanks for sharing—loving this at first glance!

og,

@timbray @atomicpoet @phanpy how's it look on mobile?

atomicpoet,
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

@og @timbray It looks good. But don’t take my word for it. Give @phanpy a try.

This is beautiful, with a lot small, very well thought out touches.

danshield,

@timbray @atomicpoet @phanpy Wow! This site is gorgeous! Threaded replies is a super nice touch. Will be revisiting frequently.

@timbray @atomicpoet @phanpy Thank you for mentioning this. I really like how @ and # links are styled - so very readable when they're inline.

nickj,

@atomicpoet searching on my web client - press a # symbol, enter text in something that looks like a disabled input but isn't.

phanpy - menu item entitled search, text goes in a box with a white background. 👍

Eddytheeagle,

@timbray I can't work out if I should boost this or not!

sparr,

@timbray This is a client feature that has little to nothing to do with the Mastodon service. Get some clients to implement it, then if it's popular and useful it would be more likely to make it into the baseline clients.

sparr,

@timbray So of course you've searched the official issue tracker to see if there's an open feature request for this, and created one if not... right?

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@sparr Oh yeah, it's there, and I upvoted it, but I also switched to phanpy.social which is excellent. But it should be done on the server-side obvs.

Columbia,

@timbray There’s a github issue considering this topic: Option to limit boosts in timeline better by setting the falloff in "Group Boosts". Maybe you want to consider giving it a 👍🏻 https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/18693

edavies,
@edavies@functional.cafe avatar

@timbray Just boosted this with full awareness of the likely irony of a self-illustrating plea.

I want my timeline to show:

  1. Toots by people I follow at the time they were tooted.

  2. Boosts by people I follow of toots by people I don't follow at the time they were first so boosted.

That's all.

jogi,
@jogi@graz.social avatar

@timbray fully agree👍

wollman,
@wollman@mastodon.social avatar

@timbray The feature I'd really like to see is "don't show me a huge color gradient rectangle in place of an image when I have explicitly said that I don't want to see images". Followed closely by "remember that I've already clicked on 'show this image' and don't make me click it again in every view".

elithebearded,
@elithebearded@fed.qaz.red avatar

@timbray This is a Mastodon bug. There's a method, but it only looks at a 40 post window. I have a pinned post linking to the issue described at Github.

subtl,

@timbray and it should store the information in a ".newsrc" file for maximum nostalgia.

david_megginson,
@david_megginson@mstdn.ca avatar

@timbray It's not an issue for me using the "Group boosts in timeline" option, but I also hide boosts from anyone who boosts too often (unless it's consistently interesting to me).

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@david_megginson I do have that set, but I still see things over and over for days.

david_megginson,
@david_megginson@mstdn.ca avatar

@timbray I guess the difference must be my liberal use of the "Hide boosts from…" option, then.

There is a misguided piece of Mastodon new-user advice that one should always boost instead of favouriting. 😟 <5% of ppl I follow do that, but that small percentage is enough to spam up my timeline with trivial boosts.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@timbray I have wanted that "squelcher" for years (on Twitter). And on Masto, not just boosts, but notifies as well. It's on the list of things to lab test in our mother of all extensions. But I would like to see it in AP core, not just Mastodon.

@timbray i can only assume you've already enabled "Group boosts in timelines"

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@est Yeah, but I still see the same thing being boosted over and over for days.

est,
@est@emily.news avatar

@timbray yeah it could be better

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@est @timbray Is that available as an option in all Mastodon clients? I know it works in @MonaApp, but I thought it was client-specific.

est,
@est@emily.news avatar

@ramsey @timbray @MonaApp i'm talking about the feature of the web app.

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@est @timbray @MonaApp I didn’t know the web client had that feature.

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@ramsey @est @MonaApp

It's in the generic web client, but it doesn't work very well, particular given high follow counts. I see things over & over.

michael,
@michael@thms.uk avatar

@ramsey @est @timbray @MonaApp

The option available in the web app I believe removes duplicates on the server side, and should therefore translate into all clients.

However, it’s not particularly helpful, as it only removes duplicates for the last 40 posts in your timeline, so if after the 41st post the same boost can re-appear.

I’ve upped that setting to 400 on my instance, which js trivial, but hard coded in the source code, so not available if you aren’t an admin.

est,
@est@emily.news avatar

@michael @ramsey @timbray @MonaApp which thing in the source code? i run my own, so i could patch mine.
