@mvario None of the people writing articles about this, including for big publications, seem to have read the specifications for this.
Topics sorts the history of the websites you visit based on broad interest categories (selected by the websites). It retains the records of your interest categories for three weeks and then they disappear on a rolling basis. /1
@mvario The categories do not include things like your health status, sexual orientation, where you have spent your money, etc. And as I mentioned these topics are stored for a short time.
Under the current tracking regime very personal stuff about you, including your health status, sexual orientation, who you live with, purchase history, etc. is tracked and stored forever. /2
@mvario You wouldn’t know this from how people are writing about it though. They spin scenario us about how Google will be able to track you with Topics and the Privacy Sandbox like that’s not the situation that already exists.
Everyone is riffing off other people’s takes or the headlines of other people’s takes, no one has read the spec, no one knows how it compares to the status quo. /end
@MisuseCase By itself if your only concern is tracking, it's probably a good thing. On the other hand along with Manifest v3 and and WEI it's about taking browser control out of the user's hands. Ultimately Google would like to put an end to ad blocking. This is a more benign piece of that roadmap.
