If you think “overpopulation” is at the root of environmental crises like climate change and you won’t acknowledge that the problem is actually an economic system that promotes relentless resource extraction, consumption, and externalizing costs to the environment, then you need to answer my follow-up question of “how many people do you think need to be genocided and which ones?”

It’s a fair question and you should show you’ve thought through your position.

“Both parties are the same” is really “the right wing has shifted the Overton Window to include the things they want and shut out the things we want.”

Or sometimes the things we want have not had their time in the Overton Window yet.

Pushing the Overton Window in any direction takes time and sustained effort. Once pushed, it does not immediately snap back when power changes hands.

Israel destroyed 300 houses in Jabalia in Gaza, and now rescuers have found 150 dead under the rubble.

The International Criminal Court is taking notes.

@allen099 @randahl So if a gang of dangerous criminals hid in your house with your family still inside, or in your child’s school with your child and their friends still inside, it would be okay to level your house or your kids’ school, with your loved ones inside, to get the gang of dangerous criminals?

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@allen099 @randahl Hamas is illegal and under sanction by most of the world. It’s why they have to get money in cryptocurrency or other under-the-table ways.

I don’t know where you get the impression that a lot of the world supports Hamas or there is no pressure on it when neither of these things are true.

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@allen099 @randahl Oh, getting back to my original point, if an internationally sanctioned and illegal terrorist organization (like Hamas is) hid in your house and took your family hostage would it be acceptable for the army to level your house with your family inside to “put pressure” on the terrorist organization?

I played a lot of (too much of?) 3 and NEW VEGAS from the late aughts through the early 2010s but it’s only on seeing the TV series and replaying FNV that I realized: hey, the worst bastards in the setting are all revanchists, accelerationists, or revanchist accelerationists.

I think it’s because the TV series really hammers the point home in a way that the games maybe don’t, even though it’s a strong through line in the series.

raph, to Israel
@raph@social.coop avatar

Once again, the issue is portrayed as a bunch of extremists who took over Israel. This is not untrue, but it hides the fact that before these extremists were anywhere near power, Israel was already systematically dispossessing, colonizing, and brutalizing Palestinians.

Every Israeli I know hates Netanyahu, Israel's messianic far right, settlements, and settlers. And I mean HATES them.

But Israeli society is still overwhelmingly supportive of the war.

1/9

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@raph “Jewish Israelis have been like this the whole time” isn’t the full story, either.

Attitudes were different enough in the 90s that Israel had a prime minister willing to work out a peace deal with Palestinians, after all. To stop a peace deal, the Israeli right-wingers assassinated that PM.

Since then, and particularly in the past 20 years, they have promoted these kinds of attitudes among Jewish Israelis.

1/2

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@raph Not only did Netanyahu and other right-wingers sabotage efforts at a peace process, spread propaganda, etc. but they deliberately inflamed violence and made things worse.

All with the support of American Evangelical Christians, I might add.

This is pretty basic “moving the Overton window” stuff. They’ve been moving it for the past generation.

2/2

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@gimulnautti @raph Similarly the Israeli right wing (and right wing Jews in America) have driven a wedge between many Israelis and the predominantly liberal/progressive American Diaspora. That was a project that they started in the early 2000s, too.

There was a survey of Israelis a few months ago asking whether they cared about the repercussions of Israel’s conduct towards Palestinians on Diaspora Jews, and most of the respondents said no.

1/2

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@gimulnautti @raph On the one hand it might not have been a fair question to ask.

On the other hand, Israelis in the 90s or prior would have had a much different view, IIRC. But Netanyahu encouraged Israelis to distrust the group most supportive of Israel abroad, because we aren’t supportive of him or the kahanists.

I'm going to stick my neck out and suggest that the extremist settler movement in Israel is rooted in the USA and culturally has a lot in common with US white supremacist/settler ideology—there's a reason Netanyahu is so comfortable with Republicans who dine at the Christian Nationalist table.

@WizardBear @cstross I had thought that American Evangelical support for the settlements and settlers was common knowledge, at least among left-wingers, but it’s not. It’s a very important aspect of what’s going on in Palestine now and has been a major factor in Israeli politics for the last 20 years

Blocked a self-described anarchist who said progressives are “closeted shitlibs.” Not in conversation with me but while talking to someone else. This person doesn’t even know I exist, probably, but that’s fine, the point is I don’t want us to get to know each other better.

You can take a person out of the reactionary right wing but that doesn’t mean you take the reactionary out of a person I guess.

What if we changed the rules so that if a US presidential candidate that supports arming Israel’s ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people wins, 15,000 American kids are randomly chosen and killed. (Unlike Palestinian kids, they’d be killed as painlessly as possible, not screaming in anguish from having been blown apart by American bombs.)

What would you do? Still vote for Biden as is or move heaven and earth to have him change his policies and/or get the Democrats to pick another candidate?

I think he’ll be the lead in a romantic comedy sageuk set to air later this year, which is a little more conventional, for him.

Okay, since I'm on laundry today, a little story.

When hubs and I first got married, we were very much enjoying our little Honeymoon Bubble, and we were being lazy as Hell. We didn't do many chores, but the laundry we really let go. We weren't wearing many clothes at home anyway, so why bother. Anyhow, after weeks we finally reached the swimming suit bottoms situation, and decided it was time. It was loads and loads of laundry that needed done, so I had my husband back the trunk of the car up to a window of the house, then he popped the trunk, and I started tossing laundry out of the window into the trunk. We went to the bank, got about $30 bucks in quarters, and found the emptiest laundry mat we could, and did it all in one fell swoop. We folded it all and loaded it back into the car using those wheeled laundry carts. We never let it get that bad again, and decided it was time to be adults, and do regular chores, but it still makes me laugh imagining what the neighbors and the laundry attendant thought.

Feel free to share your own laundry story, if you feel like it, I love hearing people's stories!

@PattyHanson @RickiTarr When I want to wash my blanket and comforter I always go to the laundromat. I have one of those stacked machines and it’s way too small.

“Most of the people arrested at the campus protests were not students or faculty” is an oft-repeated (by police and media) lie that is debunked over and over again by students and faculty participating in (and getting arrested at) these protests. Almost all the people getting arrested are students and faculty.

The purpose of the lie is to prevent us from facing the reality of what’s being perpetrated on our kids and their teachers.

I get the strong impression that even if a lot of people on Fedi think that drawing a red line on and pausing military aid shipments is some kind of trick, the government of doesn’t think so, and is doing the typical thing abusers do when they’re denied cooperation that they have come to take for granted: hurting the person who withdrew it from them, or at least anything close to hand.

Israeli security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has been complaining that cares about the too much and has been forcing the government to hold back on killing them, etc. So now Netanyahu, Ben-Gvir, et. al. are going “withhold weapons to warn us against killing them are you? You can’t tell us what to do! We’ll kill them anyway to show you.”

Some of the attitudes and behavior you see from conservatives and self-described liberals makes more sense when you understand the mindset: dead Jews and theoretical Jews are useful, but actual living Jews with opinions (and we have many opinions!) are inconvenient and difficult.

That’s been a thing for a while and it’s why nobody cares to register Jews’ criticism of Israel, or participation in campus protests. https://mastodon.social/@dangillmor/112411881715629556
