Planning on setting up a #tilde server in the next month or two. I need your suggestions for software to install on it.
I want the WEIRD stuff. I am not talking about your standard "install all the shells you can get your hands on" kind of deal. I want strange, funky console applications that barely anyone has laid eyes on in 20 years. Whatcha got?
Something a bit fancier than /etc/motd for displaying system bulletins (like "yo I put in another disk" or "this shit will be down for a couple days") when a user logs in. It should interactively take the user through reading each bulletin. It should remember which bulletins a user has read, and not display them again unless asked to.
Some sort of self-contained console-based discussion board that doesn't involve setting up a news server.
I know I've seen both of these things, on a Linux-based "BBS" (really mostly just a dial-in shell server, a primordial tilde server) back in the 90s. I'm pretty sure one or the other (or maybe they were the same package) was called something like notes but of course that's unsearchable.
(yooo alhazred, if you're out there, it's me, coldguy, I know I talked shit about it at the time but WTF were you running on that box back then?)
