That Apple ad evokes the exact same horror I felt earlier this year when I learned there are companies destroying old gadgets to turn them into art that hangs on rich people's walls.

I'm on team "there doesn't need to be a display of thumbnail, title and summary for posted links," but also on team "the thumbnail title and summaries change a lot anyway, meaning Mastodon is already serving up inaccurate info, so maybe it wouldn't be the end of the world misinformation-wise to federate them from the person who posted the link "

@skinnylatte This reminds me of rural Subway vs urban Subway. At least here in the Midwest US, if you find a Subway in the middle of nowhere, it’s probably pretty decent. You don’t eat at Subway anywhere that might be big enough to have public transit, though; in the cities they’re basically dumpsters with bread.

@textfiles One of the things I really like about Mastodon is the ability to put people in a time-boxed mute. I also practice “block early and often” but sometimes folks are just having a bad week. Or I’m having a bad week and not reacting to them well. I love the “see ya in a week” button.

I'm curious to hear from people what situations beyond "some asshole left a harmful reply and deleting my post is the only way to make it go away," cause them to use delete and redraft instead of editing the original post. I'm sure there are good reasons, I just haven't encountered any yet myself...

There was a period when I was using Elk, where edits to alt text wouldn't persist, but in that case I edited the existing post with something other than Elk rather that delete and redraft.

My phone updated to iOS 17.4.1 last night. As I was blindly fumbling with the alarm this morning, it showed me a screen, which, in retrospect, was asking me if I wanted to turn some feature on. In my grogginess, I mashed the blue button before my eyes focused enough to actually realize what I was doing. By the time I realized what was happening, it was too late, and the screen vanished. WTF did I turn on this morning?

No, but that would be a spectacularly bad idea, since the IRS is the pretty much easiest creditor in the world to work out a payment plan with and will only charge you 8% interest, but yeah let's owe that money to a pseudobank that charges 29% instead :P

The problem with letting your grassroots community party turn into a "city-sanctioned event" is that the city can then cancel your event when it's no longer convenient for the capitalists who were paying to put ads all over it.

Do they really think people aren't going to come smoke weed on Hippie Hill on 4/20? People smoke weed there every other day of the year. What kinds of fools must the organizers of the volleyball tournament be to sign up to be the replacement act? How do they think that's gonna work out for them?

If I had a nickel for every time that, two weeks before my stay, an Airbnb host has tried to get me to cancel the reservation I made over a year in advance, because they've just now realized their place is in the path of totality and finally understand why anyone would want to stay in Peehole, Indiana on a Monday, I would have two nickels, but it's funny that it happened twice.

One of our Dwarves is in a Fey mood. Normally not a huge area of concern, but she wants silk. And guess what kind of cloth we don't have?

Yup, it's time to introduce her to the Cask of Amontillado.

Other than that our fort is humming along quite nicely. We're mapping out the topmost cave layer. We're building all the required rooms. We found all the ores and will be making use of them shortly.

Let's get this fort rolling!
