The best baguette in France, judged anonymously, goes to a Sri Lankan. Mouthwatering paragraphs about French food here, and a bitter reality check about French prejudice: He wasn’t invited to the party or Macron photo op. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/29/world/europe/france-baguette.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

@NinaBernstein1 @cendawanita The NYT as usual wnt let fact checking get in the way of a good pitch. It’s the best baguette “in Paris”, not “France. Judging baguettes on the same day from across the country would be a nightmare. Élysée not paying? As any business, you’d expect them to pay monthly. There was a lot to show here: how many bakers actually are immigrants? The fact he chose to stay independant. He’s in a poorer area of Paris. Interviewing the guild who DIDNT invite him …

@cendawanita @Seishonagon Aw, c’mon — it’s a column by Riger Cohen, not a dissertation. These are quibbles, not serious deficiencies. And yes, you can revive day-old or even days-old baguette, but it will never be as good as the morning it’s baked.

@NinaBernstein1 @cendawanita inconsistently playing fast and loose with reality about places I do know … How am I to trust the NYT about places I don’t know? It may be a quibble, but it’s also a pattern. (We do agree on baguette, though)
