On weekends I pull out a mattress and sleep in the living room with Mila, my 17yo cat who loves cuddling but canā€™t come upstairs anymore (arthritis).

Her face goes from 0 (cuddling) to 100 (you better wake up now Iā€™m hungry) real quick.

(Sheā€™s on Solensia, it helps; we canā€™t use ramps because of the way our apartment is designed)

@skinnylatte solensia is magic for older cats!

Seishonagon,
@Seishonagon@hostux.social avatar

@junesim63 @skinnylatte AFAIK solensia is a monoclonal antibody (https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/22246-monoclonal-antibodies) and these are already in use for humans.

My culturally confusing and utterly delicious breakfast: a breakfast burrito made with laccha paratha (instead of tortilla) and South Indian eggs x cacio e pepe style.

For the paratha: warm up frozen paratha (I like Franco Phulka Fresh, Daily Delite or Haldiram)

For the eggs: beat eggs with cheese and pepper. Heat up oil, add fresh curry leaves (if any). When oil is hot, add eggs and cook until theyā€™re as done as you like. I had ham but you can skip it if you donā€™t eat meat

Seishonagon,
@Seishonagon@hostux.social avatar

@skinnylatte ooooh - I have curry leaves and eggs and cheese! Thatā€™s tomorrows breakfast sorted.. Very nooby-european question, though: you take the curry leaves out before eating, yes?

Definition of supporting authors:

Pre-ordering a book to get signed, then getting the dispatch notice for the second copy you pre-ordered in May and immediately forgot about (it will find a good home).

You should read ā€œA Fire Born of Exileā€ by @aliettedb - itā€™s out today, and is excellent! My review is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5708802931

@jamesthomson @aliettedb itā€™s a weird feeling when two of oneā€™s deep interest link randomly like this. James Thomson? Wait, thereā€™s a James Thomson who does crazy things like putting calculators on my TV and dice on my watch ā€¦ and ā€¦ yep, itā€™s the same one who likes this writer whoā€™s work I really dig!

The blessing and the curse of having grown up in Singapore / Malaysia / Thailand / Indonesia is I donā€™t find any food spicy, ever. But I really like extremely spicy food. Nothing is spicy anymore, nor even spicy food from those places.

Basically super spicy just registers as a flavor for me, like how you might note that something is ā€˜sweetā€™, but I donā€™t really have a reaction to it

@skinnylatte Comorian restaurant. The waiter gives me a saucer of hot paste : careful, itā€™s hot. I, macho 30y.o, taste a spoonful. After he revives me (and my GF is ROFL) I ask: how much do you eat with a meal? 3 saucers. So how is French food? Very Blandā€¦.

@pluralistic ā€˜s latest book is already hard at work at home, mere minutes after being unwrapped.
Also - that introduction has to be the clearest, most legible explanation Iā€™ve ever read about the subject.

The best baguette in France, judged anonymously, goes to a Sri Lankan. Mouthwatering paragraphs about French food here, and a bitter reality check about French prejudice: He wasnā€™t invited to the party or Macron photo op. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/29/world/europe/france-baguette.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

Seishonagon,
@Seishonagon@hostux.social avatar

@NinaBernstein1 @cendawanita The NYT as usual wnt let fact checking get in the way of a good pitch. Itā€™s the best baguette ā€œin Parisā€, not ā€œFrance. Judging baguettes on the same day from across the country would be a nightmare. ƉlysĆ©e not paying? As any business, youā€™d expect them to pay monthly. There was a lot to show here: how many bakers actually are immigrants? The fact he chose to stay independant. Heā€™s in a poorer area of Paris. Interviewing the guild who DIDNT invite him ā€¦

Seishonagon,
@Seishonagon@hostux.social avatar

@NinaBernstein1 @cendawanita inconsistently playing fast and loose with reality about places I do know ā€¦ How am I to trust the NYT about places I donā€™t know? It may be a quibble, but itā€™s also a pattern. (We do agree on baguette, though)

My fave food YouTube channels are the ones where people go deep into something they love and donā€™t feel they have to explain. Iā€™m tired of NYT-style white gazy recipes that go ā€˜lemongrass is <so exotic, hereā€™s how you use it>ā€™. No thanks. Jump straight into something of value and super tasty, assume people know things (or will look things up if they donā€™t).

Bong Eats is always reliable for well, Bengali food, and here they reverse engineer a chicken rezala

In some queer spaces, people speak of running away to ā€˜better countriesā€™ when things become really bad but (1) things are also bad in many of those countries (2) I donā€™t think all of you will legally or financially be able to go to those countries. The idea that fascism is an immigration hop away downplays how relentless fascism is, and how difficult immigration is

Seishonagon,
@Seishonagon@hostux.social avatar

@skinnylatte @Skiriki add France to the list of ā€œnot very nice to liveā€ and ā€œprobably impossible to get visa forā€ - our current ultra right wing leader got photographed in an actual Nazi era VW beetle doing what really looks like a Nazi salute - and she has a more than even chance to be our next president.

The part of cooking YouTube I despise is ā€˜some bro discovers he can add anything to instant ramenā€™ but itā€™s a thing that all Asian kids did when they were seven years old. ā€˜You can ADD EGGS TO RAMEN WOWā€™

I donā€™t like YouTube cooking bros.

@skinnylatte Oooh this is like opening a cupboard and finding a stash of cookbooks! Thanks.
Also, I looked up ā€œHelen Rennie sous-videā€. She makes good points - and the fact that YTā€™s auto captioning hears ā€œSovietā€ when she says ā€œSous-videā€ makes it hilarious. ā€œI simply donā€™t enjoy sovietā€ . You bet!
